What owners say they hear
Coverage by Tech Advisor and MacRumors describes intermittent crackling, popping, ticks, or clicks near the speaker area. Some accounts point to the earpiece, while others do not make clear whether the sound comes from the upper or lower speaker.
Reports describe different circumstances, including app use, scrolling, notifications, keyboard activity, cellular calls, brightness changes, and toggling Airplane Mode. Those varied anecdotes are not controlled reproduction steps, and they do not demonstrate that any one action causes the sound.
What is—and is not—confirmed
The reports concern both iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max; the available coverage does not establish that one model is more affected. 9to5Mac characterized the reports as a “small number,” but supplied no measured denominator or prevalence estimate, so that phrase cannot be turned into a percentage or a claim that the issue is widespread.

MacRumors also relayed accounts from some owners who said a replacement phone produced a similar sound. That is not proof of a manufacturing defect: the cause remains unconfirmed, and a similar experience on a replacement does not distinguish hardware from software or another factor. The coverage reviewed by October 3, 2026, contains no definitive Apple diagnosis or issue-specific repair. Apple announced the two models on September 9, 2026, but its product-performance testing does not diagnose these later owner reports.
Safe checks to try
Apple’s general iPhone speaker troubleshooting guidance is useful for basic checks, but Apple does not present it as a fix for this particular reported behavior.

- Inspect the openings. Check whether the speaker and receiver openings are blocked or dirty. If cleaning is needed, Apple advises using a small, clean, dry, soft-bristled brush.
- Test the ringtone and alerts. Move the ringtone/alerts slider and listen for sound from the phone.
- Try a speakerphone call. Make a call with speakerphone enabled and note whether the sound occurs there, during ordinary playback, or in both situations.
- Seek service if sound problems persist. Apple says persistent speaker problems may require service. These general checks should not be treated as a confirmed remedy for intermittent clicks reported by other owners.
Apple notes that crackling or static during calls can sometimes relate to network or reception. That general call guidance does not establish a network cause for the speaker-area clicks described in these reports.
