An iPhone does not provide a general-purpose serial port that you can open like a computer’s /dev/tty. Lightning and USB-C are connectors, not serial terminals: wired serial communication requires a compatible accessory, a supported protocol, and an app that can communicate with it. Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) is another option when the accessory and app support the same protocol.
Can you use an iPhone as a serial terminal?
Not through a built-in, general-purpose UART interface. Plugging in a cable or adapter does not by itself give an iPhone a serial console. The connection works only when the accessory exposes a communication method iOS supports and an app can use that method.
For wired accessories, Apple documents the External Accessory framework for compatible MFi accessories. The accessory maker determines which third-party apps may communicate with its device. An app should check the accessory’s declared protocols and connect only when the protocol it needs is listed.
Wired serial: when an MFi accessory can work
An MFi accessory can communicate with an iOS app using a protocol it declares through Apple’s External Accessory framework. A connected accessory is not necessarily ready for an app to use: if it is not authenticated, it may report no supported protocols. Both the accessory’s protocol and the app’s support for it matter.

Authentication does not turn every serial device into an iPhone-compatible accessory. Apple’s Platform Security documentation says that an accessory without authentication is limited to analog audio and a small subset of serial (UART) audio playback controls. That narrow allowance is not a general-purpose UART data port.
For hobby projects, consider a supported serial solution or BLE
Third-party hobbyist solutions
Apple’s MFi FAQ recommends using a third-party hobbyist solution to connect iOS devices to serial devices, then writing an app that communicates with those devices. This is a route for project builders, not a promise that any USB-to-serial dongle will work with an iPhone.

Bluetooth Low Energy
Apps can communicate with Bluetooth Low Energy accessories using Apple’s Core Bluetooth framework. A BLE UART module can suit a serial project if its firmware protocol is supported by the iOS app you plan to use. Check the module’s protocol documentation and the app’s stated support before buying; the label “BLE UART” alone does not establish compatibility.

USB-C alone does not guarantee support for a generic USB-to-UART adapter. Apple’s MFi guidance distinguishes USB-C charging accessories and USB Device Class accessories that do not use MFi-licensed technologies from accessories that implement iAP2 over USB, which are within the MFi program. That description of MFi program scope is not a compatibility list and does not establish that a particular iPhone will recognize a particular adapter.

Before relying on a wired USB setup, verify compatibility for the exact iPhone model, iOS version, adapter, target device, and app. The same caution applies to Lightning: the connector’s presence does not mean a passive cable or generic serial adapter will work.

What to check before choosing a connection
- Connection path: Is the accessory a compatible MFi wired device, or will the project use BLE?
- Data protocol: What protocol does the accessory actually implement, and does the app support it?
- App authorization: For an MFi accessory, has its maker enabled the app you intend to use?
- Electrical requirements: Does the target device’s UART interface have compatible voltage levels and wiring? A serial protocol match does not establish electrical compatibility.
- Specific device support: Confirm the exact iPhone, iOS version, adapter or module, and app combination with their documentation or manufacturer. Apple’s public guidance cited here does not provide a universal USB-to-UART adapter list or model-by-model compatibility matrix.
