There is no single best phone for every US shopper. TechRadar’s US guide updated September 24, 2026 names the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max its best iPhones, the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra its best Android, the Google Pixel 10a its budget pick, and the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra its foldable pick. Those are category recommendations—not a verified, consistently ranked top 10. Choose by the things that matter most to you: budget, operating system, camera, battery, size, or a specialist design.
How to choose among the current phone picks
Start with your budget and operating-system preference, then narrow the field by camera, battery, screen size, and whether you want a conventional phone or a foldable. The buying guides considered here make different editorial choices and do not provide a single comparable dataset covering every model. Their category labels are useful starting points, not proof that one phone wins for everyone.
- Want an iPhone? TechRadar’s September 24, 2026 US guide recommends the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. PhoneArena’s earlier August 11 guide selects the iPhone 17 Pro Max. The difference reflects guide dates and editorial assessments; it is not a direct, like-for-like test result.
- Want a premium Android? The Galaxy S26 Ultra is the clearest point of agreement: TechRadar, PhoneArena, and Tom’s Guide all identify it as a leading Android choice in their guides.
- Want to spend less? TechRadar names the Pixel 10a its budget pick. Treat it as a value-category alternative, not a feature-for-feature equivalent to a premium flagship.
- Want a different form factor or specialty? Compare foldable, flip, compact, gaming, or other feature-led options on the benefit you actually need and the trade-offs you are willing to accept.
Leading picks by buyer priority
iPhone: iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max
TechRadar’s US guide, updated September 24, 2026, names both models as its best iPhone and says its testing placed the new Pro phones at the top of its list. That is the most recent iPhone recommendation in the sources here. PhoneArena’s August 11, 2026 guide instead chooses the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Its discussion highlights the appeal of a large display, camera, and battery, while warning that the phone’s size and premium price will not suit everyone. These recommendations should be read with their dates attached, rather than blended into a claim of universal agreement.
Android flagship: Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra
TechRadar, PhoneArena, and Tom’s Guide each name the Galaxy S26 Ultra as a leading Android phone. Tom’s Guide describes it as comprehensive but expensive, a useful distinction for shoppers who want broad flagship capability but do not need to spend at that level. PhoneArena lists a 6.9-inch 120Hz display, Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, 200MP main camera, two telephoto cameras, 5,000mAh battery, and 60W wired charging. These are specifications published by PhoneArena, not independent measurements established here.

Budget pick: Google Pixel 10a
TechRadar names the Pixel 10a its budget phone, and WIRED includes it among its Android recommendations. It is a sensible model to investigate if controlling the purchase price matters more than matching premium-flagship hardware. The guides do not establish a current US price or a direct value comparison under a shared test method, so check the exact unlocked or carrier configuration and live price before deciding.
Foldables and other specialist choices
TechRadar names the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra its foldable pick. WIRED’s Android guide also covers the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 and Motorola Razr Ultra (2026), among other models. PhoneArena presents categories for foldables, flip phones, battery, compactness, camera, and AI features, while Tom’s Guide includes foldable, battery, and other specialist categories. These are different use cases, not interchangeable alternatives to a conventional flagship: consider whether the form factor or feature is worth its associated compromises.

Gaming phones illustrate why a category win should not be mistaken for an all-around win. Tom’s Guide’s gaming-phone discussion weighs unusually long tested battery life against dated software support, price, and camera quality. A strength that matters in a narrow use case may be a poor exchange for another buyer.
What the Android shortlist includes
WIRED’s September 2026 Android guide shows the range of options beyond the most expensive models. Its recommendations include the Pixel 10a and Pixel 11 series; Samsung Galaxy S26, S26+, S26 Ultra, and S26 FE; Motorola Moto G Power 2026, Razr Ultra (2026), and Edge 2026; Fairphone (Gen. 6+); and Nothing Phone (4a) Pro. This breadth is useful for identifying alternatives by price, design, or feature set, but WIRED’s Android guide is not a head-to-head ranking against iPhones.

TechRadar says the Pixel 11 series and a new Pixel Fold have been announced but are awaiting full reviews and comparisons in its guide. Their comparative standing in that guide is therefore unsettled. TechRadar also says it removed the OnePlus 15 from its US best-Android slot after OnePlus withdrew from the US market; shoppers should not assume a recommendation from another market or an older list applies to US availability.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why this is not a validated top 10 ranking
The available guides support category picks and a useful shortlist, but they do not substantiate ten models in a common, independently validated order. They use different update dates, categories, and editorial judgments, and the evidence here is not one lab dataset with comparable measurements for every candidate. Calling these recommendations “number one” through “number ten” would imply a level of direct comparison the sources do not establish.

For a more rigorous model-by-model decision, compare current US price and storage, operating system, dimensions and weight, display, battery results under the same named test protocol, camera quality, performance, update commitment, and repair or warranty details. Keep reviewer measurements distinct from manufacturer specifications, and check whether advertised pricing depends on a trade-in, carrier, or promotion. The sources summarized here do not establish current comparable prices, battery-test results, update commitments, or warranty and repair terms across the listed phones.

Before you buy
- Confirm the model is available in the US and that the listing is for the intended unlocked or carrier-locked version.
- Check storage configuration and the actual checkout price; headline prices can reflect a different tier or a trade-in or carrier offer.
- Match the phone’s size and form factor to how you carry and use it, especially for large Pro Max and foldable models.
- Compare the exact camera, battery, and software-support details you value using current, directly comparable evidence rather than specifications alone.
