Epic CEO Tim Sweeney said in February 2022 that Fortnite would not be updated for Steam Deck support because Epic lacked confidence it could combat cheating across the range of Linux kernel configurations, including custom ones. He separately said Epic was working to improve Easy Anti-Cheat compatibility for other Steam Deck games. The statement is historical: the sources cited here do not establish Fortnite’s current SteamOS or Proton compatibility.
What did Tim Sweeney say about Fortnite on Steam Deck?
In a February 7, 2022 exchange reported by GameSpot, a user asked whether Epic would make Fortnite compatible with Proton/Wine and Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) and BattlEye on Linux. Sweeney’s answer distinguished Fortnite from Epic’s broader anti-cheat work: “Fortnite no, but there’s a big effort underway to maximize Easy Anti Cheat compatibility with Steam Deck.”
When asked why Fortnite was excluded, Sweeney said, as quoted by GameSpot: “We don’t have confidence that we’d be able to combat cheating at scale under a wide array of kernel configurations including custom ones.” PC Gamer also reported the exchange at the time. The phrase “Linux beats down cheaters” is a headline-style paraphrase, not Sweeney’s exact wording; his stated concern was enforcing anti-cheat across diverse Linux configurations, not that Linux players generally cheat.
Why did Linux configurations matter to Epic?
Linux systems can use different kernels and configurations, including user-customized ones. Sweeney’s concern, as reported by GameSpot, was that this variety would make it harder to establish and enforce a reliable anti-cheat approach for Fortnite. He described the threat model as dependent on each game’s scale and the incentive to cheat:

“The threat model for anti-cheat varies per game based on the number of active players and ability to gain profit by selling cheats or gain prominence by cheating. Hence anti-cheat which suffices for one game may not for another game with 10, 100, or 1000 times more players.”
In that 2022 discussion, Sweeney cited 60 million active players for Fortnite, according to GameSpot. That is a historical figure attributed to Sweeney in the contemporaneous report, not a current player count. GameSpot also reported that he questioned the size of the market for non-Steam-hosted games on the Steam Deck, which had limited availability at the time. His comments therefore point to an anti-cheat concern and a product-support decision; the report does not establish market size as Epic’s sole reason.

Does Epic’s later anti-cheat policy mean Fortnite now supports Steam Deck?
No. Epic’s current Fortnite competitive-rules page describes PC tournament requirements and anti-cheat measures, but it does not confirm Steam Deck or SteamOS compatibility. The page says PC players in all tournaments must have Secure Boot, TPM, and IOMMU enabled from February 19. Epic explains that IOMMU helps control how devices access system memory and protect game memory from cheat hardware.
The same page describes several layers of protection: Easy Anti-Cheat kernel-level protection while Fortnite runs, exploit fixes, measures intended to make game systems harder to reverse-engineer, suspicious-behavior monitoring using data and machine learning, and ongoing detection work. Epic says about 95% of Fortnite PC players likely already meet Windows 11 compatibility requirements or can enable them without new hardware. That estimate concerns PC players and the stated tournament requirements; it is not evidence of Linux support.

Epic Player Support says its cheating-offense policy changed in April 2025: a first offense brings a one-year matchmaking ban, and a second brings a lifetime ban. During a first ban, a player can still log in and chat, but cannot enter Epic- or creator-made matchmaking experiences or spectate. The support page does not connect this enforcement policy to Steam Deck compatibility.

A separate example shows why a publisher might block Linux, but it does not establish Fortnite’s status. In an October 31, 2024 update, Respawn said it blocked Linux access to Apex Legends, including Linux on Steam Deck, because it could not reliably distinguish a legitimate Steam Deck from a malicious cheat claiming to be one through Linux. Respawn said players could still use a handheld for Apex by installing Windows. That was Respawn’s decision about Apex, not a confirmation of Epic’s present-day policy for Fortnite.

- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
What is known about Fortnite on Steam Deck today?
The sources cited here establish what Sweeney said in February 2022 and describe later PC anti-cheat policies, but they do not verify whether Fortnite’s SteamOS or Proton compatibility has since changed.
