Reddit plans to restrict Old Reddit access for logged-in accounts that have not used the legacy interface within the previous six months. The change is expected “in the next few months,” but Reddit has not announced a start date. Logged-in moderators are exempt from the recent-use requirement, and Reddit has not said that Old Reddit is shutting down.
What Reddit’s six-month rule changes
In a September 30, 2026 update, Reddit said it will further limit access to Old Reddit, its legacy desktop interface. Under the planned rule, logged-in users will need to have used Old Reddit within the preceding six months to retain access. Logged-in moderators can continue using it without meeting that condition.
Reddit gave a broad rollout window—“in the next few months”—but no exact date, timezone, or schedule for a staged rollout. The rule is announced, not yet described as fully implemented. Reddit also has not specified what activity counts as “use,” so it has not confirmed whether simply opening a page or another particular action will qualify.

Reddit described the six-month window as covering “the vast majority” of Old Reddit users, but did not publish a percentage or user count. That is the company’s qualitative characterization, not a reported measurement.

Do you have to log in to use Old Reddit?
Reddit says it had already required users to log in to use Old Reddit earlier in 2026. The September change adds a separate eligibility test: being logged in alone will no longer be enough for non-moderator accounts that have not used the interface recently.
In an August 5, 2026 infrastructure update, Reddit said it would continue requiring login “in the short term” while it worked on legacy systems, critical bot migration, and moderator workflows. The later six-month proposal addresses what Reddit called a remaining gap: logged-in accounts with no history of Old Reddit use.

Why is Reddit limiting access?
Reddit says the login requirement reduced unauthenticated scraping, but did not prevent access by logged-in accounts with no Old Reddit usage history. Its September update says the new lookback is intended to “close this gap.” The company frames the change as a measure against scraping and automated abuse; its posts do not establish a separate consumer-facing motive.

No shutdown date is included in the announcement. Reddit says it is “still working on the future of Old Reddit,” while describing this as one of several forthcoming changes. That leaves the interface’s longer-term status unsettled, but the six-month restriction itself is not a confirmed shutdown.
