Android’s Advanced Protection is an optional, one-switch bundle of security settings. On Android 17, Google has added protections including tighter controls on accessibility services and disabling Chrome WebGPU when the mode is on. To enable it, open Settings > Security & Privacy > Other settings > Advanced Protection, turn on Device protection, and follow the prompts. A screen lock is required; some devices may need to restart.
How to turn on Advanced Protection
- Open your phone’s Settings app.
- Tap Security & Privacy, then under Other settings, tap Advanced Protection.
- Turn on Device protection, review the setup prompt, and tap Turn on.
A screen lock must already be set. Depending on the device, a restart may be needed to activate some protections. Menu labels can vary; if you do not see the option, search Settings for “Advanced Protection.” Google also documents an alternate route through Google > All services > Personal and device safety > Advanced Protection. What Advanced Protection does on Android 17
Advanced Protection is a security mode, not a separate app. Google describes it as a single control point for protections across Android and Google apps. The exact protections available can depend on the phone, supported hardware, app, and region.
Protections included in the broader bundle
- Google Play Protect: Play Protect cannot be turned off while Device protection is enabled.
- App installation safeguards: blocks installation and updates for apps from unknown sources.
- Accessibility services: restricts access to verified apps categorized as Accessibility Tools, helping limit an abuse route while retaining legitimate assistive technology.
- Theft and offline protections: includes theft and offline locking features; availability can vary.
- USB and authentication safeguards: includes USB Protection and Failed Authentication Lock on supported devices.
- Google apps: adds protections in Google Messages and Phone by Google, and safer browsing in Android and Chrome.
- Mobile network: includes 2G Network Protection on supported devices.
- Chrome: disables Chrome’s JavaScript optimizer and WebGPU while the mode is enabled.
These are protections Google lists for Advanced Protection; they should not be read as a guarantee that every item appears or works identically on every Android phone. Google’s Android Help coverage list provides the current device-facing overview.

Android 17 additions and device limits
Google’s October 1, 2026 update highlights new or expanded controls in Advanced Protection. USB Protection makes a new USB connection charging-only while the phone is locked; connections established before the screen locks persist. Google says it is available on Pixel 6 and newer and selected Android 17 devices. Hardware differences can affect locked-device behavior, including charging speed.
Failed Authentication Lock can lock down the device after repeated failed authentication attempts in settings or secured apps, but Google says it is available only on select Android 17 devices. Google’s feature announcement describes these availability limits.

The settings page can also show apps that check Advanced Protection status. Google Help separately says the “Apps that checked for Device protection” view is available in Advanced Protection settings on Android 16 devices only, so do not assume the same supporting-app screen is present across Android versions.
Should you enable Intrusion Logging?
Intrusion Logging is optional and requires a separate manual opt-in; enabling Device protection does not mean you have opted into logging. During setup, you can enable it or skip it. If you enable it, choose a Google Account for encrypted backup of device logs. Google says network and security events are end-to-end encrypted, stored in the cloud, and retained for a rolling 12 months before automatic deletion.

The logs are intended to provide forensic context, but the practical value of long-term logging varies by person. Enable it if that potential record is useful to you; otherwise, leave it off. Account Protection is a separate enrollment flow within Advanced Protection. Details are in Google’s Android Advanced Protection update and Android Help.

Check the setting on your own device rather than assuming Android 17 makes every feature available. Google says Android 17 rolled out first to Pixel and would reach other eligible Android devices during 2026, but that platform-level rollout statement does not promise every phone will receive every Advanced Protection feature. Android 17 also includes security changes beyond the Advanced Protection switch. Google’s 2026 security overview describes Android OS verification initially on Pixel devices, stronger failed-PIN/password attempt limits on supported devices, theft protections enabled by default on new, freshly reset, or upgraded Android 17 devices, and biometric authentication for Mark as lost. Advanced Protection on versus off
