Is the Metro Redux next-gen update free?
Yes. Deep Silver says existing owners of either METRO 2033 Redux or METRO Last Light Redux will receive the update free. The publisher names Steam, Epic Games Store, Windows Store, GOG, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Its announcement does not specify additional license-transfer or entitlement terms, so check the store where you own the game for the update when it becomes available. What does the Metro Redux update add?
Across platforms, Deep Silver lists 4K textures, improvements to animation fidelity, audio quality and environmental detail, plus community-led bug fixes and quality-of-life changes. The company says the update preserves the original Redux experience and aesthetic rather than remaking or fully remastering the games. The performance and feature descriptions below are publisher claims; independent testing results are not included in the announcement.

- TSR upscaling and anti-aliasing on Xbox Series X; the announcement does not assign those features to Series S.
- Spatial audio on Xbox platforms and Impulse Triggers on Xbox controllers.
- Xbox Handheld and Xbox Play Anywhere support, as well as Power Optimized Mode. The publisher does not explain the mode’s precise behavior.
PC
- DLSS and spatial audio.
- Community bug fixes and requested quality-of-life improvements.
Deep Silver does not specify a DLSS version or a PC performance target. It also lists runtime hardware tessellation and displacement on consoles, but does not give further implementation details in the announcement.
Is this a remaster, and are the final specifications known?
No: Deep Silver explicitly says the update is not a full remaster or remake, and that it preserves the Redux games’ experience and aesthetic. The October 1 announcement is not a complete technical specification. The publisher says full patch notes, including technical improvements and platform-specific details, will be revealed at launch, so details beyond the announced features remain unconfirmed.

How does the update relate to Metro 2039?
METRO 2039 is scheduled for February 4, 2027. Some territories, including Asia, Australia and New Zealand, are listed for February 5. In a September 3, 2026 PlayStation Blog post, Robbie Cooke, Head of Brand at 4A Games, described it as a solo, story-driven FPS with a new protagonist called The Stranger. The post says it is available to wishlist on PlayStation Store and that pre-orders are expected later in 2026. Neither announcement says the Redux update is required to play METRO 2039.
Deep Silver also reported that 50 million copies of Metro games had been sold worldwide in 2026. That is the publisher’s franchise sales figure, not a player count or an independently audited total.
