ARM announced the ARM mbed IoT Starter Kit – Ethernet Edition with IBM on February 24, 2015. It paired a sensor-equipped Freescale FRDM-K64F development board with IBM’s Bluemix cloud platform so developers could send device readings to the cloud and prototype connected applications. It is now a legacy product: Arm says Mbed OS and the Mbed Platform reached end of life in July 2026, and its online build tools are no longer available.
What the IBM and ARM IoT starter kit included
The kit combined the Freescale FRDM-K64F Freedom development board with an mbed sensor IO application shield. The board used an ARM Cortex-M4 processor and built-in Ethernet; the wired connection was the announced route from the device to IBM Bluemix and IBM IoT Foundation.
Contemporary hardware descriptions list a temperature sensor, three-axis accelerometer, RGB LED, five-way joystick, two potentiometers, speaker and a 128-by-32-pixel LCD on the shield. Element14 reported a 120 MHz Cortex-M4, 256 KB of RAM and 1 MB of flash for the kit in 2015. These are historical specifications, not confirmation of present stock or condition.
How it connected device readings to IBM’s cloud
The intended workflow was to collect readings from the board’s sensors, transmit them over Ethernet to IBM’s cloud service, and use cloud tools to view the data or develop an application around it. The announcement presented the bundle as a prototyping kit: it brought together device sensing, cloud analytics and application resources rather than promising a finished consumer IoT product.

In a contemporary hands-on report, IEEE Spectrum’s Stephen Cass said he reached sensor visualization in under three minutes during his test. That was one reporter’s experience, not a typical or guaranteed setup time. Cass found that moving beyond viewing readings involved more steps: registering the device for credentials, editing and compiling firmware, transferring the resulting binary, and working through documentation he described as scattered or inconsistent.
What the kit was like to use
Ethernet made the original setup straightforward to connect but tethered the board to a wired network. Cass made his setup portable with an Ethernet-to-Wi-Fi adapter and separate USB battery packs; those were his additions, not components identified as included in the kit.

The kit’s appeal was the path from physical sensors to cloud-connected experiments on one development platform. Its trade-off was that prototyping beyond the initial demonstration required embedded-development work and a functioning software and service stack.
What Mbed’s end of life means now
Arm’s education page states that Mbed OS and the Mbed Platform reached end of life in July 2026. Arm also said the Mbed website would be archived and its online tools would no longer build projects. That lifecycle change matters if you are following old setup guides: instructions that depend on Mbed’s online build services should not be assumed to work today.

This does not establish that every FRDM-K64F board or independent toolchain is unusable. It does mean the original kit should be treated as legacy hardware and software. Before choosing it for a new project, verify the current state of the firmware instructions, the cloud endpoints you intend to use, and the availability and compatibility of any required components.

The core board is identifiable by its model, NXP FRDM-K64F. A board sold under that model is not necessarily the complete historical starter kit: buying it alone does not establish that the sensor shield is included, that IBM cloud access is available, or that an operational Mbed setup comes with it. The kit was distributed through regional element14 outlets in 2015, but that historical announcement does not confirm current availability.
Rank #4
If evaluating it against a current development board, compare wired Ethernet with available wireless options, the onboard sensors and peripherals, support for current firmware and cloud tools, and the quality of present-day documentation. The 2015 kit’s specifications and original cloud demonstration are useful context, but they are not a current compatibility or availability guarantee.
