NetApp Novus is an AI-factory storage architecture that separates metadata management from the data path. Its first configuration pairs Novus Data Director software on qualified Supermicro infrastructure with ONTAP data services on NetApp AFF A90 systems. NetApp says the architecture is orderable and is designed to exceed 100 TB/s aggregate throughput, but that figure is a target—not a verified deployed-system result.
What NetApp Novus is
Novus is an architecture for large AI-factory environments, particularly neoclouds and GPU-as-a-Service providers. It is not simply a new name for the AFF A90: the design combines a metadata tier with a separate storage data tier under one namespace. NetApp announced it on September 29, 2026. NetApp’s announcement
How Novus separates metadata from data
Metadata operations and movement of stored data have different scaling demands. Novus is designed to let metadata, bandwidth, capacity, and concurrency scale independently while presenting a shared namespace. NetApp’s rationale is that many clients making data and metadata requests—especially during large checkpoint activity—can strain storage serving a large GPU fleet. This describes the design goal, not a customer-validated performance outcome. NetApp’s Novus overview
Metadata tier: Novus Data Director
In the initial configuration, Novus Data Director provides the metadata software layer and runs on qualified Supermicro infrastructure. The announcement identifies this infrastructure as part of the initial configuration; it does not establish that arbitrary Supermicro systems are qualified.
#1 Best Overall
- (1) 1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1TB = 1 trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment.
- For RAID-optimized NAS systems with unlimited number of bays
- Rated for 550TB/yr workload rate(2) | (2) Annualized Workload Rate = TB transferred x (8760 / recorded power-on hours). The maximum rated workload is specified for operating at typical temperature of 40C. Workload Rate will vary depending on your hardware and software components and configurations.
- Designed to handle the demands of high-intensity 24x7 multi-user NAS environments
- Western Digital partners with a wide range of NAS system vendors for extensive testing to ensure compatibility with most NAS enclosures
Data tier: ONTAP on AFF A90
ONTAP data services on NetApp AFF A90 systems provide the data layer. The AFF A90 is therefore a component of the first-release Novus configuration, rather than the entire Novus architecture.
Client access: supported Linux environments
NetApp describes standards-based pNFS/NFS access through supported Linux client environments. That wording does not establish support for every Linux distribution, client version, or configuration. The announcement material does not provide a complete compatibility matrix.

What the 100 TB/s target means
NetApp says Novus is designed to exceed 100 TB/s of aggregate throughput for large GPU environments. StorageReview likewise characterizes the figure as a target or projection, not a demonstrated result. The sources available for the September 29, 2026 launch do not show an independently verified deployed Novus system achieving that throughput. StorageReview’s launch coverage
Aggregate throughput is an architecture-level bandwidth claim; by itself, it does not establish the performance a particular installation will deliver. The announcement does not supply a customer deployment benchmark, test configuration, or independently measured result to use for that comparison.

NetApp also says GPU utilization can fall below 30 percent when AI factories cannot supply GPUs with enough data. That is the company’s cited statistic, not a universal independently measured utilization rate. NetApp Chief Product Officer Syam Nair said: “AI factories struggle and GPU economics collapse when data can’t keep up,” NetApp’s announcement
Is NetApp Novus orderable now?
NetApp said Novus was orderable as of its September 29, 2026 announcement. That is the announcement-era availability statement; it does not establish current stock, delivery timing, or a particular configuration’s availability. The cited materials do not state a price or lead time.

What the announcement does—and does not—establish
- Established: the first configuration uses Novus Data Director on qualified Supermicro infrastructure and ONTAP data services on AFF A90 systems.
- Established: NetApp describes pNFS/NFS access through supported Linux environments, within the scope of those supported clients.
- Vendor-stated target: more than 100 TB/s aggregate throughput; the sources do not establish that a deployed system has achieved it.
- Not established in the cited launch material: Novus pricing, lead times, customer deployment results, or independent benchmark comparisons.
How to assess Novus against another storage approach
A meaningful evaluation should compare how each architecture scales metadata and data, its bandwidth and concurrency claims, namespace behavior, client protocol and supported operating environments, and whether its performance figures come from a design target or measured deployments. The launch sources do not provide comparable independent benchmarks or customer results, so they are not enough to rank Novus against alternatives on realized performance.
