Chrome Canary for Android is testing a prompt for biometric authentication before it fills a saved password. The option is experimental, and enabling it does not guarantee that the prompt will appear: an Android Authority test on a Pixel 8 did not trigger it, while another user reported seeing it.
What the password autofill test does
The Chrome Canary flag is named “Biometric reauth for password filling,” and Chromium lists its identifier as biometric-reauth-password-filling. When active, it can ask you to authenticate with a biometric after you choose a saved credential and before Chrome fills the password. The test is intended to add a check in situations where someone can use a phone that is already unlocked; its security effect has not been measured.
This is an Android Canary experiment, not a feature confirmed for stable Chrome. The available reports do not establish which devices or biometric methods are supported, how access is being rolled out, or when—or whether—it will reach stable Chrome.
How to try the flag in Chrome Canary
- Update Chrome Canary on your Android device.
- Open
chrome://flagsin Canary. - Search for Biometric reauth for password filling, then set the flag to Enabled.
- Relaunch Canary when prompted.
- Visit a site where Chrome has a saved password and select that credential to test autofill.
The flag may be available without producing a prompt. Android Authority enabled it on a Pixel 8 and force-closed and reopened Canary, but did not see the authentication check. The report’s tipster did see one after selecting “Use saved password.” They used different Canary builds, but the report does not establish that build differences explain the outcome.

Why you may not see a prompt
Enabling a test flag is not a guarantee that its behavior will activate on your device. The reported results differ, and there is no confirmed device-eligibility list or rollout rule to explain who will see the prompt. If it does not appear, that alone does not show that you configured the flag incorrectly.
What this means for stable Chrome
Chrome previously tested authentication before password autofill in Dev and Canary during 2025, then removed that experiment before it reached stable Chrome, according to Android Authority. The current test could also change or be removed. No stable release commitment or date has been established.

Do not confuse it with Wallet or card autofill
Google’s June 23, 2026 announcement about advanced form autofill using Google Wallet concerns a separate feature, including sensitive information filled with user permission. It does not show that biometric reauthentication for saved passwords has launched.
Likewise, Chromium’s 2020 statement that “Biometric information never leaves your device” referred to biometric authentication for retrieving credit-card numbers. It is not evidence about how the current password-autofill experiment handles biometric information.
