APIs are the contracts that let independently deployable microservices request capabilities from one another without exposing their internal code or technology choices. An API gateway can give outside clients a stable entry point and apply shared policies, while internal services can communicate through REST, gRPC, or asynchronous messages according to their needs. A gateway is useful, but it is not a requirement for every microservices system.

What APIs do in a microservices architecture

A microservice owns a capability and can be developed and deployed independently. To use another service’s capability, it needs a defined way to communicate with it. That definition is the API: the operations or messages available, their data shapes, expected errors, authentication requirements, and rules for changing the contract.

Microsoft Learn describes the principle this way: “They communicate through well-defined APIs, which keeps internal implementations hidden from other services.” A service can therefore change its internal implementation—or use a different technology stack—without requiring consumers to know how it works, provided the published contract remains compatible.

APIs also set the boundaries of responsibility. A service should own the rules for its business capability; callers should not need direct access to its database or private implementation. When a contract is unclear, changes can break consumers, and consumers may become coupled to details the service owner needs to change.

What an API gateway adds

An API gateway is a centralized entry point and reverse proxy for traffic from clients into an application. Microsoft Learn describes it as a centralized entry point for managing interactions between clients and application services. AWS similarly calls Amazon API Gateway a “front door” for applications accessing backend data, business logic, or functionality.

Rather than making a client track the locations and topology of several internal services, the client calls a stable gateway endpoint. The gateway routes requests to the appropriate service and can handle shared concerns such as authentication, SSL or mutual TLS termination, rate limiting, logging, monitoring, caching, compression, and web-application-firewall controls. Depending on the application, it can also aggregate requests or translate protocols.

When a gateway is useful

  • Clients need one stable endpoint even as internal services change.
  • Several services need consistent edge policies, such as rate limits or authentication checks.
  • A client would otherwise need to make multiple backend calls to assemble one response.
  • You want to limit direct exposure of internal service endpoints.

When it adds costs

  • Every request routed through it gains an additional network hop, which can add latency.
  • A heavily used gateway can become a bottleneck or a critical dependency if it is not operated reliably.
  • Gateway configuration and operation add complexity.
  • Putting domain rules in the gateway can blur service ownership and make the gateway harder to change. Keep business logic in the service that owns it.

A gateway is not the API itself: it is an intermediary that exposes, routes, and may govern APIs. A system can also have internal service APIs that clients never call directly.

Choosing how services communicate

REST, gRPC, GraphQL, and asynchronous messaging address different communication needs; no single style is best for every call. Compare them against interoperability, latency and throughput needs, contract governance, browser and client reach, failure behavior, observability, security, and the skills available to operate them.

  • Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
Style Useful when Trade-offs to consider
REST over HTTP Broad language, browser, and client compatibility matters, and ordinary request/response interactions fit the capability. It has mature tooling and low client coupling. Microsoft recommends it as the default unless the performance benefits of a binary protocol are needed.
gRPC Services are under coordinated control and benefit from strongly defined contracts and efficient binary transport. Plan how clients that expect ordinary HTTP semantics will reach it; a gateway or protocol translation may be needed.
GraphQL Clients need flexible aggregation of data from multiple backend resources. Schema ownership and query cost need active governance.
Asynchronous messaging Work can be decoupled in time, or buffering and event-driven workflows are important. It can reduce synchronous dependency chains, but the interaction is not an immediate request/response exchange; define message contracts and account for the resulting failure behavior.

For Amazon API Gateway, AWS documents REST APIs as synchronous request/response integrations with HTTP endpoints, Lambda functions, or other AWS services. That describes this AWS product’s REST API model, not every possible gateway or every communication style in a microservices system.

Do microservices need an API gateway?

No. Services need well-defined contracts to communicate, but that does not mean every architecture must put an API gateway in front of them. A gateway is most relevant when clients need a managed entry point to backend services or when shared edge policies and routing provide real value. Internal service-to-service communication can use its own contracts and mechanisms.

Seagate 2TB Portable Hard Drive | USB 3.0 (STGX2000400)
  • Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Use a gateway when its stable endpoint, routing, aggregation, or centralized edge controls outweigh the extra hop and operational responsibility. Avoid using it as a place to accumulate business behavior that belongs to the services. In particular, distinguish the need for an API contract—which is fundamental to service communication—from the choice to introduce a gateway, which is an architectural option.

API gateway versus service mesh

The main distinction is the traffic each is designed to manage. An API gateway primarily handles north-south traffic: requests entering the platform from clients. A service mesh primarily handles east-west traffic: communication among services inside the platform.

API gateway Service mesh
Primary traffic Client-to-platform (north-south) Service-to-service (east-west)
Primary focus API exposure, routing, and shared controls at the platform edge Uniform security, governance, and telemetry for internal service communication
Possible capabilities Authentication, rate limiting, logging, caching, and request routing Proxy-based handling of service traffic; proxies can also provide ingress behavior and translate between RPC, gRPC, REST, and web-facing HTTP/HTTPS, as described by NIST

CNCF describes meshes as useful for consistent security, governance, and telemetry, while gateways focus on API exposure and productization. Some platforms use both: a gateway for the client-facing edge and a mesh for internal service traffic. A mesh’s ability to provide ingress or protocol translation does not make it interchangeable with every gateway; choose based on the traffic and API-management needs the platform actually has.

Design API contracts for independent change

Independent deployment works only when consumers can rely on contracts that evolve without surprise. Treat API definitions as versioned contracts and make their semantics explicit: what an operation does, what data it accepts and returns, which errors it can produce, and what authentication it expects.

  • Prefer compatible changes. Additions that existing consumers can ignore are generally safer than changing or removing fields and operations they rely on.
  • Version deliberately. When a breaking change is necessary, define how consumers move to the new contract and publish a deprecation timeline rather than removing the old behavior without notice.
  • Make operations and retries explicit. Define idempotent behavior where appropriate, and test failure and retry behavior so a repeated request does not create an unintended second effect.
  • Validate contracts in CI. Check API schemas and compatibility as part of the development workflow, before a change reaches consumers.
  • Avoid chatty interactions. Excessive small network calls increase communication overhead and can tie a consumer’s success to several services responding in sequence. Design operations around useful capabilities rather than exposing every internal step.
  • Keep domain ownership clear. Put business rules in the service responsible for them, not in a gateway that sits between multiple services and their consumers.

These practices make the API boundary a tool for reducing coupling rather than a new place where hidden dependencies accumulate.
