The best Garmin GPS navigation device depends on where you plan to use it: choose a DriveSmart for a car, a zūmo XT2 for motorcycle rides, or a GPSMAP 67-series handheld for trails and expeditions. Garmin’s published specifications describe different features for each job, but do not establish that one is universally more accurate or performs better than the others.

Best Garmin GPS devices by use case

For car navigation: DriveSmart 66, 76, and 86

Choose a DriveSmart if you want a dedicated portable navigator for a car. Garmin’s 2021 announcement describes 6-, 7-, and 8-inch HD display options, detailed North American maps, hands-free calling, driver alerts, voice assistance, traveler points of interest, and Wi-Fi map and software updates. The 8-inch model can be mounted in landscape or portrait orientation. Garmin’s DriveSmart announcement and product listing describe live traffic, cameras, weather, and fuel-price services as features available when paired with a compatible smartphone running the Garmin Drive app; these are not simply onboard services independent of a phone.

The DriveSmart 76 listing specifies a 7-inch high-resolution touchscreen, voice assistance, Bluetooth hands-free calling, and live traffic and weather through a compatible phone running Garmin Drive. Choose screen size and dashboard fit according to your vehicle; confirm the regional map coverage and exact model variant before buying.

For motorcycle rides: zūmo XT2

The zūmo XT2 is the purpose-built option for motorcycle navigation. Garmin’s U.S. product listing describes a 6-inch diagonal, high-brightness HD display, motorcycle mount, IPX7 water rating, route planning, and the ability to switch among road, topographic, and satellite imagery. Garmin’s April 2023 announcement also describes Adventurous Routing, rider alerts, group tracking, and ride summaries in the Tread app. Compatibility with inReach and PowerSwitch products is mentioned, but those accessories are separate products; check the exact bundle and compatibility before purchase. See Garmin’s zūmo XT2 listing and announcement.

#1 Best Overall
Garmin Drive™ 53 GPS Navigator
  • Bright, high-resolution 5” glass capacitive touchscreen display lets you easily view your route
  • Get more situational awareness with alerts for school zones, speed changes, sharp curves and more
  • View food, fuel and rest areas along your active route, and see upcoming cities and milestones
  • View Tripadvisor traveler ratings for top-rated restaurants, hotels and attractions to help you make the most of road trips
  • Directory of U.S. national parks simplifies navigation to entrances, visitor centers and landmarks within the parks

Group features have different connection requirements. Group Ride Mobile requires a compatible phone running the Tread app and active cellular service. Garmin says the separately sold Group Ride Radio accessory supports group tracking without cellular coverage for compatible zūmo XT2 riders. The product listing gives battery life of up to seven hours under its stated conditions, or up to five hours at 100% backlight; actual use depends on the conditions and settings. Verify these specifications for the edition or bundle you intend to buy.

For hiking and expeditions: GPSMAP 67 or 67i

The GPSMAP 67 series suits users who want a button-operated handheld for outdoor navigation. Garmin’s March 2023 release describes a 3-inch sunlight-readable color display, multi-GNSS and multi-band positioning, preloaded TopoActive maps, satellite imagery access, a 3-axis compass, and a barometric altimeter. Garmin states maximum battery life of up to 180 hours in standard mode and up to 840 hours in expedition mode. These are manufacturer-stated maxima, not independent test results. Details are in Garmin’s GPSMAP 67-series announcement.

Garmin DriveSmart 66, 6-inch Car GPS Navigator with Bright, Crisp High-Resolution Maps and Garmin Voice Assist
  • 6” high-resolution navigator includes map updates of North America
  • Hands-free calling when paired with your compatible smartphone with BLUETOOTH technology and convenient Garmin voice assist lets you ask for directions to places you want to go
  • Road trip–ready features include the HISTORY database of notable sites, a U.S. national parks directory, Tripadvisor traveler ratings and millions of Foursquare POIs
  • Driver alerts for things such as school zones, sharp curves and speed changes help encourage safer driving and increase situational awareness
  • Access live traffic, fuel prices, parking, weather and smart notifications when you pair this navigator with your compatible smartphone running the Garmin Drive app

Pick the GPSMAP 67i rather than the 67 if satellite communication is part of your plan. The 67i adds two-way messaging, location tracking, and interactive SOS through the Iridium satellite network, and requires an active satellite subscription. The 67 offers the navigation features described above without those 67i communication capabilities.

What to compare before buying

Maps and route planning

  • Car: The cited DriveSmart announcement describes detailed North American maps. Check the map region for your specific device and travel plans.
  • Motorcycle: zūmo XT2 supports road, topographic, and satellite imagery views, with route planning and Garmin Adventurous Routing features.
  • Trail and expedition: GPSMAP 67-series devices come with TopoActive mapping, according to Garmin’s release; satellite imagery access is also described.

Display, controls, mounting, and durability

Think about whether you need a large in-car screen, a bright display viewed while riding, or a compact handheld controlled with buttons. The zūmo XT2 listing specifies an IPX7 water rating and a motorcycle mount. Garmin’s cited DriveSmart and GPSMAP 67 materials establish their display sizes and controls, but do not provide comparable cross-device durability ratings. Confirm physical fit, mounting hardware, and included accessories for the model and bundle sold in your region.

How to make the final choice

  1. Start with the activity: car, motorcycle, or outdoor handheld navigation.
  2. Check map coverage and routing: confirm the geography and mapping options match your trip.
  3. List required connections: decide whether phone-based services, cellular group tracking, or satellite messaging and SOS are necessary.
  4. Check the physical setup: compare screen and controls, mount compatibility, weather needs, and power requirements for the environment.
  5. Verify the exact purchase: confirm current availability, regional version, bundle contents, subscription needs, and price for the model you intend to buy.

Garmin’s published material supports matching these devices to their intended activities, but it does not provide controlled cross-model tests that establish a single best performer for accuracy, reliability, or overall navigation quality.
