Depending on the TV and settings, that may include content from an antenna, streaming service, or device connected over HDMI—not only the TV maker’s own apps. ACR, ad personalization, app data, and voice features can have separate controls, so switching off one setting does not necessarily stop every kind of data use.
What is Automatic Content Recognition?
Automatic Content Recognition, or ACR, is technology that can identify content displayed on a TV by comparing a digital signature or fingerprint with a catalog of known programs, games, or advertisements. It is not the same as simply recording everything on screen.
Roku says its system generates an encrypted fingerprint from sampled screen pixels and matches it against a catalog. Its support page says personal videos are not matched when they are not in that catalog. Samsung describes its optional ACR as generating unique signatures; its disclosures also name viewing history, a Personalized Service ID, and an IP address among information that may be collected. These are descriptions of the respective companies’ systems, not a guarantee that every TV behaves the same way. Roku’s ACR explanation; Samsung support.
Can a TV track what I watch through HDMI?
Some platforms say their viewing-data features can cover external inputs as well as TV apps. Roku says Smart TV Experience can gather information about viewing through streaming, antenna, and connected devices. VIZIO describes viewing behavior and usage that may include programming, advertisements, games, HDMI-connected devices, and third-party apps. The actual scope depends on the platform, enabled features, terms, and model; it is not evidence that every TV captures every input. Roku support; VIZIO Viewing Data Supplement.

Why do TV companies collect viewing data?
Company disclosures describe several uses. Samsung says viewing information can support personalized recommendations and interactive marketing. It says enabling SyncPlus or other marketing features may provide video or audio snippets to third-party providers so they can return synchronized content or advertising. Samsung also says disabling those interactive marketing features does not affect other types of ads on its Smart TVs. Samsung Smart TV privacy supplement.
VIZIO describes using viewing data for audience measurement—for example, estimating program popularity, how many viewers finish a program, and whether or how often commercials are watched—and for tailored advertising on VIZIO and third-party platforms or devices. Its disclosure says information may be associated using identifiers such as an IP address, device ID, email, phone number, or account information. VIZIO Viewing Data Supplement.

How do I turn off ACR or viewing data on my TV?
Use the instructions for your TV’s platform, then confirm the setting on the device itself. Menus can vary by model, software version, and product year; a manufacturer’s support page is a useful starting point if the labels differ.

Samsung says ACR applies if you opted into Viewing Information Services during setup. The cited support guidance does not give one menu path that applies to every model, so search your TV’s Settings for Viewing Information Services and review the privacy choices shown on the device. Does turning off personalized ads stop TV tracking?
No single ad or ACR toggle should be treated as a universal stop switch. ACR, viewing-data collection, advertising identifiers, app-level data, and voice recognition may be controlled separately.

A 2024 preprint tested Samsung and LG smart TVs in the UK and US. The authors reported ACR-related network activity in some tested scenarios, including when a TV was used as an external display, and differences in behavior between the two countries. They also reported that opting out stopped traffic to the ACR domains they identified in those experiments. The study is limited to its tested devices, locations, and scenarios: it does not establish how common tracking is across all TVs, describe every current model, or prove that one brand is categorically more private. Read the 2024 study.
A separate historical case illustrates why disclosure and consent matter, but should not be mistaken for a current audit of all manufacturers. In a 2017 announcement, the Federal Trade Commission said a stipulated court order in its VIZIO proceeding required prominent disclosure and affirmative express consent for the covered data collection and sharing, barred misrepresentations about privacy and security, and required deletion of data collected before March 1, 2016. The FTC described allegations involving second-by-second viewing information and cross-device ad targeting and reported a $2.2 million settlement payment, including a suspended portion. Those facts concern that specific case and period. FTC’s 2017 announcement.
