To save a single Skype call recording, download it from its chat; to collect video messages and other media in bulk, use Microsoft’s Skype Export page. The direct chat download is an MP4, while a bulk export arrives as a .tar archive. Microsoft’s December 20, 2025 update extended the stated export window until June 2026, so check the export page promptly.
Choose between saving one recording and exporting your history

Use the chat method when the recording is still available and you need that one item. Use the export method to request a broader set of conversations and files.
Download video messages and other media with Skype Export
- Sign in to Microsoft’s Skype Export page.
- Select Conversations, Files, or both, depending on what you want included.
- Choose Submit request.
- Return to the export page periodically. When the request is ready, find it under Available Exports and click Download.
Microsoft says exported media can include files, pictures, videos, video messages, voicemail, and call recordings. The export is asynchronous, so it may not be ready immediately. The export categories describe what the service can include; they do not guarantee that every deleted, failed-upload, or legacy item will be recoverable.
Extract and browse the downloaded archive
The export downloads as a .tar archive. Keep the original archive as a backup before working with the extracted files.

Windows 10 and Windows 11
- Open Command Prompt and change to the folder where the archive was downloaded. For example, if it is in Downloads, change to that folder.
- Run
tar -xvf YOURFILENAME_export.tar, replacing the example filename with the name of your downloaded archive. - Open the extracted directory. It contains
messages.json; Microsoft also documents using its Skype parser viewer and the includedindex.htmlto browse the history.
If double-clicking the archive does not open it, use the documented command or another trusted archive utility. Microsoft’s extraction instructions do not endorse a specific third-party utility.
macOS
macOS has built-in support for .tar archives; open the downloaded archive to extract it, then inspect the resulting folder for the exported message data and media.

Save a call recording directly from a chat
Microsoft’s Skype call-recording guidance says a recording is posted in the chat after the call. That guidance gives a 30-day availability period, so save a recording promptly and confirm the controls shown in your current Skype interface.
Desktop
- Open the chat containing the recording.
- Select More options next to the recording.
- Choose Save to Downloads or Save as, then select the destination if prompted.
The saved recording is an MP4.
Mobile
- Open the chat and touch and hold the recording.
- Choose Save.
The recording is downloaded to the device’s camera roll as an MP4.

Act before the export window closes
Microsoft Support’s December 20, 2025 update says: “We are extending the timeframe you have to export your Skype data until June 2026.” Because that deadline is time-sensitive, use the current export page rather than assuming the portal will remain available later.

- The bulk export is not ready: Return to the export page and check Available Exports; Microsoft describes the request as asynchronous.
- The archive will not open on Windows: Try the
tar -xvfcommand above or a trusted archive utility. - A video appears in chat but is missing from the export: The available Microsoft guidance does not promise recovery of every deleted, failed, or legacy item. The export page only establishes the media categories it may include.
- The recording is no longer available in chat: The recording guidance’s stated 30-day period is a reason to save promptly; it is not a guarantee that an older recording can be restored.
If the videos matter, retain the original .tar file and make a second copy of the extracted media in a separate location.
