Mikochi is a self-hosted web file manager for browsing and changing files on a server or NAS. It provides a focused browser interface for searching, uploading, creating folders, renaming, deleting and downloading files, plus links that open media in VLC or mpv. It is not a hosted cloud-storage subscription or a collaboration suite: you run it beside the directory you want to manage.

What Mikochi does

The project describes itself as “A minimalist file-manager with streaming capabilities.” A Go/Gin server exposes a directory through a Preact web interface. Once the application can read the configured data directory, you can manage that directory remotely from a browser.

  • Browse folders and files remotely.
  • Use fuzzy filename search.
  • Upload files and create folders.
  • Rename or delete items.
  • Download individual files.
  • Download a directory as a .tar.gz archive.
  • Generate a link that opens a file in VLC or mpv.

The last item is an external-player workflow. Mikochi creates a stream link for your player; it does not provide a hosted video catalog, subscription streaming service or media-transcoding platform.

Who it is for

Mikochi fits an operator who already has a self-hosted server, home lab, or NAS and wants a small browser-based way to handle files. Typical tasks include browsing files on a server, uploading files to a home server, downloading a folder from a NAS, or opening a server-hosted video in VLC.

“NAS support” in the project documentation identifies NAS devices as a target environment, not a certification list. The project does not publish tested NAS models in the material reviewed here, so compatibility depends on whether your device can run the selected deployment method and expose the intended directory with suitable permissions. You do not need to buy a new NAS if an existing server or NAS already meets those requirements.

What Mikochi is not

  • Not a hosted cloud drive: your files remain on the server or NAS you configure; Mikochi is the interface you run.
  • Not a collaboration suite: the documented feature set centers on file operations rather than comments, office editing, team workspaces or enterprise sharing controls.
  • Not a complete media server: VLC and mpv links launch playback in those applications; the project does not document a subscription-style streaming service.

Deployment choices

The repository documents several installation routes. Choose the one that matches the operating system or platform you already administer; the project does not publish comparative benchmarks for setup effort or security.

Route Best fit Documented scope
Docker Hosts already managed with containers Container deployment; production-build documentation describes amd64, arm64 and armv7 images.
Kubernetes Helm chart Kubernetes clusters Installation through the project’s Helm packaging.
Debian-family package Debian, Ubuntu or Mint systems .deb package installation.
Fedora/Red Hat/CentOS package RPM-based systems .rpm package installation.
Precompiled binary Operators who prefer a standalone executable Run the published binary and supply its configuration.

Installation examples in the project README reference version 1.12.0. Treat that as version-specific documentation from the time it was written, and check the repository’s current release and commands before installing because package names, image tags and configuration details can change.

Configuration that controls access

Mikochi’s settings determine which files it can reach, how users sign in and whether traffic can use TLS. The README lists these environment settings and defaults:

Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
Setting Documented default or purpose
HOST 0.0.0.0:80; the address and port the service listens on.
DATA_DIR /data; the directory exposed through the file manager.
JWT_SECRET Random by default. The README advises against setting it manually because generating a new secret at each restart can invalidate tokens.
USERNAME root in the example configuration.
PASSWORD pass in the example configuration.
CERT_CA and CERT_KEY Paths for the TLS certificate and private key.
NO_AUTH false by default; setting it disables all authentication.
GZIP false by default.
FRONTEND_FILES Controls the frontend files used by the service.

The root/pass values are sample defaults, not credentials to leave in a live deployment. Set a strong, unique password and keep the service reachable only through networks and proxies you control.

A safe setup sequence

  1. Choose the deployment route. Use Docker, Helm, the appropriate distribution package or the binary according to your host.
  2. Select a narrow data directory. Set DATA_DIR to the files Mikochi should manage. Avoid exposing an entire system volume when a dedicated share or subdirectory is sufficient.
  3. Set credentials. Replace the sample username and password. Leave authentication enabled unless you have a tightly controlled, non-user-facing reason to disable it.
  4. Plan the listening address. Review HOST and any reverse proxy or firewall rules so the service is not accidentally exposed beyond the networks that need it.
  5. Configure TLS where appropriate. Supply the certificate and key paths with CERT_CA and CERT_KEY, or follow your current proxy’s documented TLS arrangement.
  6. Check filesystem permissions. The account or container running Mikochi must be able to read and modify the selected directory for the operations you expect; permissions outside that directory remain an operating-system concern.
  7. Verify after restart. Sign in, browse the intended directory, upload a non-critical test file, rename it, download it and remove it. If tokens stop working after a restart, review how JWT_SECRET is being generated or persisted.

Security boundaries and operational risks

Mikochi handles real server-side files, so DATA_DIR, credentials and network exposure are consequential. The project documents authentication controls and TLS certificate paths, but the available project material does not establish an independent security audit or guarantee safe operation under every reverse-proxy or public-network configuration.

  • Do not set NO_AUTH=true on a network where untrusted users can reach the service.
  • Do not treat the example credentials as production-ready.
  • Use least-privilege filesystem permissions and a deliberately chosen data directory.
  • Keep deployment, proxy and firewall settings aligned with the current project guidance.
  • Test downloads, uploads and playback links without exposing sensitive directories.

The repository links to a Docker-and-Traefik security tutorial, but its detailed recommendations are outside the documented facts here; review the current tutorial and your own proxy configuration before relying on it.

Everyday workflows

Browse and find a file

Open Mikochi in a browser, navigate the configured directory and use fuzzy filename search when the folder contains many items. Search is filename-oriented; the documented feature does not claim full-text indexing of file contents.

Upload or organize files

Use the upload control to place files in the current folder, create a folder for a new collection, then rename items as needed. The resulting files are written to the server-side directory, subject to the service account’s permissions.

Download a folder

Select a directory for download. Mikochi packages directory downloads as a .tar.gz archive rather than transferring the folder as a native directory tree.

Play a file in VLC or mpv

Generate the stream link from Mikochi and open it with VLC or mpv. Playback still depends on network reachability, the player and the file format; generating a link does not turn Mikochi into a managed media-hosting service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Mikochi replace a cloud-storage service?

No. Mikochi is software you run on your own server or NAS to manage a configured directory. It does not provide hosted storage, subscriptions or a collaboration platform.

Does Mikochi work with every NAS?

The project names NAS devices as a target environment but does not publish a certified-model list. Compatibility depends on whether your NAS can run the chosen deployment method and provide the required directory permissions.

Authentication is disabled completely. Only use that setting in a tightly controlled environment; it should not be treated as a safe default for a reachable network.

How are folder downloads delivered?

Mikochi packages a selected directory as a .tar.gz archive.

The Bottom Line

Mikochi is a good fit when you want a small, self-hosted browser for basic server or NAS file operations and occasional VLC/mpv playback links. Its value depends on careful directory, credential, TLS and network configuration; it is not a hosted cloud drive or full media server.
