Find it under Settings and more (…) > Settings > System and performance > Manage your performance. It can reduce Edge’s memory demand, but it is not a guaranteed hard cap and Microsoft has not published a measured frame-rate improvement from using it.
Turn on Edge resource controls
- Open Microsoft Edge and select Settings and more (…) in the upper-right corner.
- Select Settings, then open System and performance.
- Under Manage your performance, enable resource controls.
- Choose the memory limit offered by your Edge version. By default, the control applies while PC gaming. Select Always if you want it to apply outside gaming, too.
Microsoft announced the feature in Edge Beta 125 on May 2, 2024. The precise options visible can depend on the Edge version and device; consult Microsoft’s resource controls page for its current description.
What the memory limit actually does
This is a browser-side control: it does not reserve memory for a game or impose a Windows-wide limit on other applications. Edge continues to function normally until it reaches the selected limit, then tries to reduce its memory use. Microsoft describes it as an effort to stay below the value, not an absolute ceiling, so observed usage can sometimes exceed the selection. Choose a limit without hurting browsing
Microsoft does not recommend one universal limit in megabytes for gamers. A suitable choice depends on your PC’s available memory and what you do in Edge. Setting it too low may constrain browser performance, especially if you keep many tabs open or use memory-intensive pages.

Watch how Edge behaves after enabling the control. More tabs may sleep or be discarded, and returning to a discarded tab can trigger a reload. If browsing becomes sluggish or pages reload more often than you can tolerate, raise the selected limit or turn off the control.
How this differs from Edge’s automatic gaming features
The user-selected resource control is distinct from PC gaming boost, which Microsoft describes as automatically reducing Edge resources when a game launches. They can both relate to Edge’s behavior during a game, but the memory limit is a setting you choose; gaming boost is automatic. Microsoft notes that gaming-feature availability and functionality can vary by device, market, and browser version. Its PC gaming performance page describes that feature separately.

Efficiency mode is another separate Edge performance feature. Do not confuse Edge’s browser settings with the process-level “Efficiency mode” option in Windows Task Manager; Microsoft treats them as distinct controls. See Microsoft’s performance-features support page.
Managed work or school devices
Administrators can control whether users have access to RAM resource controls with the RAMResourceControlsEnabled policy. Microsoft also documents TotalMemoryLimitMb, which sets a memory limit in megabytes for a single Edge instance. These are organization-level policy controls, not instructions for setting a personal gaming preference; consult Microsoft’s RAMResourceControlsEnabled policy documentation and TotalMemoryLimitMb policy documentation for policy details.

Will it improve game performance?
Reducing Edge’s memory use may leave more system memory available to other programs, but Microsoft’s cited materials do not quantify a resulting FPS increase, latency reduction, or specific memory saving. The setting is most useful when Edge is competing for memory and you are willing to accept possible tab reloads or slower browsing in exchange for tighter browser memory management. It cannot guarantee a particular gaming outcome.
