Audible announced three AI-assisted listening features on October 1, 2026: Character Guide, Interactive Story and Visual Explorer. The features were rolling out in a limited beta for Audible customers in the United States and United Kingdom, and the initial experience varies by title. Character Guide helps listeners follow who is speaking, Interactive Story adds a conversation with a character, and Visual Explorer brings related images and context into the listening experience.
What Audible announced
Audible framed the features as different ways to engage with selected stories, developed with creators and shaped around the titles they accompany. They are additions to listening, not replacements for the original audiobooks. The company said it would evolve them in response to customer and creator feedback. Audible’s October 1 announcement described a limited beta for customers in the U.S. and U.K.
How the three features differ

These are distinct experiences rather than competing versions of one feature. Audible did not state a recurring price or separate purchase requirement for them in the announcement.
Character Guide: follow the cast without spoilers
Character Guide appears on the player page. It offers spoiler-free character cards with performer headshots and biographies, and indicates who is speaking as playback unfolds. That can help with a story that has a large cast or multiple voices without requiring listeners to pause and search elsewhere.

Audible also said that the ability to ask questions about the production as the story unfolds was “coming soon.” That conversational question-and-answer capability should not be confused with the character cards and speaker identification announced as available at launch. The announced titles included Dracula and 1984; Exoplanet, written by Benjamin Percy and executive produced by Andy Weir, was identified for a November 5 release. Because this was a limited beta announcement, the supported catalog and dates may change.
Interactive Story: talk with Renfield in an added Dracula experience
Interactive Story is the feature that involves a direct exchange. In the Dracula example, Renfield speaks first, assigning the listener a role, goal and stakes. The listener responds in their own words, and the character reacts. This is a bonus experience beyond the audiobook’s original narrative, rather than a change to the recorded story.

Audible said creators define foundations for the experience, including opening scenes, turning points and a character’s persona. The company described product design intended to keep interactions faithful to the creator’s vision; it did not present the feature as an unrestricted conversation with a character. The announcement does not establish how every possible response is handled or whether the experience is available across other titles.
Visual Explorer: add images and context to listening
Visual Explorer presents relevant imagery and contextual information during playback. Audible pointed to The Cultural Tutor’s Grand Tour: The Story of Europe in Six Cities as an example. Its creator, Sheehan Quirke, said he could shape what listeners see and when, making imagery part of the storytelling rather than a generic set of illustrations.

That creator control is important to the feature’s purpose: the visuals accompany a particular work and are selected for its context. The announcement did not describe Visual Explorer as a general image search or as a feature available for every audiobook.
Who can try the features, and what titles are involved?
At announcement, Audible described a limited beta for customers in the United States and United Kingdom—not a universal release. Access depended on both market and supported title. The examples Audible identified were the Audible Original Dracula, George Orwell’s 1984, Exoplanet, and The Cultural Tutor’s Grand Tour: The Story of Europe in Six Cities. The announcement specified November 5 for the forthcoming Exoplanet release, but did not establish that date as a continuing or current availability guarantee.

Check the title’s Audible player page and feature availability in your account for the current status. A beta catalog can change, so the announcement alone cannot confirm present access in a particular market.

The features use AI to add guidance, interaction or context, but the announcement emphasizes creator-defined experiences rather than presenting them as substitutes for authors, performers or the audiobook itself. The clearest conversational example is a designed encounter with Renfield, bounded by creator-set foundations. A listener who wants only to hear the narration can simply treat these tools as optional additions where available.

Not every listener will want to talk to an AI character. A contemporaneous Reddit post expressed that objection, but one post is an individual reaction, not evidence of broader listener sentiment. Audible Chief Content Officer Rachel Ghiazza described the features as a new step in audio storytelling; her statement was promotional framing, not an independent measure of their impact.
