It is important when a deployment needs those functions; not every IoT system requires a separate gateway, and gateways do not all provide the same capabilities.
What is an IoT gateway?
An IoT gateway is equipment that interconnects IoT devices with communication networks. Devices may use communication methods or protocols that differ from those used by an external network or application. A gateway can adapt between those sides so they can communicate, as described in ITU-T Recommendation Y.4101/Y.2067, which the ITU lists as in force.
The term describes a role in a system, not one universal feature set. Depending on the application, a gateway may connect devices to a network, adapt protocols, forward messages to applications, process data locally, coordinate devices, and support device management or security. ITU-T’s Y.4418 architecture organizes gateway capabilities into application support, security management, device management, network adaptation, device coordination, and device adaptation.
Is an IoT gateway important?
It can be essential when devices need an intermediary to reach a network, when their protocols need adaptation, or when the system relies on local processing or message forwarding. In those cases, the gateway is an important integration point between devices, networks, and applications.

- Support multiple communication modes. Support TCP server/TCP client/UDP mode/UDP multicast. MQTT/JSON to Modbus. More flexible conversion of multiple protocols. Support multi hosts roll polling. Different Network devices will be identified and responded respectively, No more Crosstalk issue while communicating with multi Network devices
- User-Defined Heartbeat/Registration Packet. Easy for Cloud Communication and Device Identification. Support NTP Protocol. Getting Network Time Info for serial output or data Upload. Suitable for applications like data acquisition, IoT gateway, safety & security IoT, and intelligent instrument monitoring
It is not automatically necessary as a separate box in every IoT deployment. The system design and application determine whether gateway functions are needed and whether they are provided by dedicated equipment or another part of the system. The ITU standards describe possible functions rather than requiring one particular physical arrangement.
What does an IoT gateway do?
Connects devices and networks
The gateway provides a path between IoT devices and a communication network. The required connections depend on the devices and the network the application uses.

- NO SUBSCRIPTION FEES & PRIVATE LORAWAN NETWORK: Build a local LoRaWAN IoT network with the built-in SIoT server and pre-installed Node-RED. Collect data, create dashboards, and run automation flows locally without required cloud service fees. Suitable for DIY makers, home gardeners, educators, and small IoT prototype projects.
- LOCAL DATA PROCESSING & PRIVACY CONTROL: Sensor data can be processed on the local network through the built‑in MQTT/SIoT server, reducing reliance on third‑party cloud platforms. Local automation rules continue running when internet access is unavailable — suitable for home, garden, greenhouse, and classroom IoT setups.
- 4KM COVERAGE & 8-CHANNEL RELIABILITY: Equipped with the SX1302 8-channel LoRaWAN chip, -140dBm sensitivity, 27dBm max transmit power, and included 5dBi antenna. Supports up to 4km coverage in open environments, helping connect garden sensors, greenhouse nodes, garages, mailboxes, and remote monitoring points.
- NODE-RED DRAG-AND-DROP VISUAL AUTOMATION:Automation rules, data dashboards, and control logic can be built with little to no coding using the pre‑installed Node‑RED. Flows such as reading soil moisture, checking temperature, and sending relay commands are created through a visual interface — reducing setup time for maker, education, and prototype projects.
- EASY SETUP WITH WIFI AP & MQTT INTEGRATION: Configure the gateway via Wi-Fi AP mode using a laptop or mobile device. Built-in MQTT broker supports integration with Node-RED dashboards, and other MQTT-compatible platforms. Designed for indoor residential, educational, and prototyping use; not intended for outdoor installation.
Adapts protocols and coordinates devices
Where the device side and network side use different protocols or communication requirements, the gateway can adapt between them. It may also coordinate connected devices; which adaptations and coordination functions are needed depends on the application.
Forwards messages or processes data locally
Application support can include forwarding device messages onward or processing information locally. Local processing may matter when the system needs to act on data near the devices rather than relying solely on an application elsewhere. Whether a particular gateway supports the required processing should be checked against its specifications.

Supports management and security
Gateway architectures can include device and gateway management functions. Security capabilities may include authentication and authorization, key management, and privacy protection. These are potential functions, not assurances that every gateway implements them or that a gateway alone makes a deployment secure.
How to decide what gateway functions you need
Start with the system requirements, not a generic product label. The Telecommunication Engineering Centre’s draft generic requirements for IoT gateways, dated 2025-05-22, are consultation material rather than a final universal rule. Together with ITU-T architecture documents, they provide a useful functional checklist:

- Device-side compatibility: Identify the devices and protocols the gateway must support, including any required adaptation.
- Network and application path: Establish the upstream network connection and how messages must reach the application.
- Local processing: Decide whether data must be processed near the devices or whether forwarding it onward is sufficient.
- Management: Determine what device and gateway management the deployment requires.
- Security: Specify needed controls, such as authentication, authorization, key management, and privacy protections.
- Deployment conditions: Account for the application scenario and the conditions where the equipment will operate.
Compare options against these requirements. Official requirements describe capabilities to consider; they do not identify one gateway as the best fit for every deployment.

A gateway can serve as one security control point, but it is not a complete security plan. ITU-T X.1361 describes a security framework based on gateways and a method for determining capabilities to address IoT threats and challenges. The Y.4418 architecture also identifies security-management functions such as authentication, authorization, key management, and privacy protection.

Security also depends on how devices communicate and how the wider system is configured. NIST’s FAQ for NISTIR 8259 and 8259A explains Manufacturer Usage Description (MUD), through which a manufacturer can specify the network communications a device needs for its intended function. That is one way to inform network controls; it does not make the gateway a standalone guarantee of security.
