In an October 1, 2026 article, How-To Geek’s Patrick Campanale reported finding a configuration with an Intel Celeron J4005 processor (two cores and two threads) and 4GB of RAM for under $50. A thin client is a low-powered computer originally designed to connect to a remote server. In a homelab, a used one can instead serve as a small x86 machine for compatible self-hosted services. The appeal is a potentially inexpensive way to get an x86 system; the trade-off is that the specific unit’s configuration, condition, and suitability need checking.
Thin client or Raspberry Pi 4: what is actually different?
The core distinction is architecture: the cited Wyse 5070 configuration uses an x86 Intel processor, while the Raspberry Pi 4 uses ARM. That can affect operating-system and application compatibility, so check the requirements for the services you intend to run rather than assuming one architecture is universally better. Neither cited source provides workload benchmarks or a direct power comparison.

The starting-price figures are not a like-for-like cost comparison. Campanale also reported seeing a 4GB Pi 4B for at least $100 in the author’s market, but the article did not identify the exact retailer, location, configuration, or stock behind that observation. The manufacturer’s $35 starting price does not confirm a complete setup at that price, but it does mean the reported $100 comparison should not be treated as a universal Pi price.
When a used thin client makes sense
Consider the Wyse 5070 if you want an x86 machine, find a verified unit whose full cost fits your budget, and confirm that your chosen operating system and services support its processor and memory. It may be a better fit than a Pi for a particular homelab plan, but the available sources do not establish that it will run any given service faster or use less power.

A Raspberry Pi 4 may suit you better if its ARM platform works with your software and you value the manufacturer-highlighted small size, low-power design, or GPIO-oriented project ecosystem. Its listed RAM variants and interfaces may also suit a project that needs a specific configuration or connection. The cited sources do not provide a direct size, power, or performance test between these devices.
What to check before buying a Wyse 5070
Because the under-$50 example is a used-market find, verify the unit rather than relying on the model name or listing headline. Ask the seller or inspect the listing for:

The defensible takeaway is narrower: a suitably configured used thin client can be an alternative for some homelab roles when its price, condition, and x86 compatibility work for the buyer. Raspberry Pi remains a distinct option with ARM, manufacturer-listed configuration choices, and a different project ecosystem.
