Google’s Guided Vision, announced on October 1, 2026, adds camera-based, spoken visual assistance to Gemini Live on Android. During a voice conversation, Gemini can describe what the phone sees, answer follow-up questions, read nearby text, help locate objects, and tell the user how to reframe the camera. It is designed as an assistive utility—not a navigation system, obstacle detector, mobility aid, or medical device.
The timing invites comparison with Apple’s May 2025 accessibility announcement, but Apple introduced a collection of different features rather than a direct Guided Vision equivalent. The meaningful comparison is how each company approaches platform, camera use, live descriptions, reading, and assistive-technology access.
What Guided Vision does in Gemini Live
Guided Vision combines the Android phone camera with Gemini Live’s voice conversation. After the user shares the camera, Gemini describes the immediate view and accepts spoken follow-up questions. If the framing is poor—for example, the camera is too high, too close, or pointed to one side—it can verbally ask the user to pan, tilt, or step back.
Google says the feature was built alongside blind and low-vision communities. Its stated audience also includes people who want help with everyday visual tasks, older adults, people with low literacy, and anyone trying to read fine print in dim light. The launch announcement is available from Google.

Reading text and displays
Guided Vision can be used to ask about food labels, menus, appliance displays, dials, and washing-machine cycles. That includes tasks such as asking Gemini to read a nutrition label or describe a low-lit menu. Results depend on the camera view, lighting, text size, and Gemini’s interpretation, so important information should be checked independently.
Finding nearby objects
Google’s examples include locating a dropped earbud or identifying an item in a crowded spice cabinet. The user can keep a conversation going while moving the phone, asking where an object is or requesting more detail about what is visible.
Describing surroundings and appearance
Gemini can describe an unfamiliar room, a table of objects, colors, shapes, and patterns, including clothing. Google also says it has tested conversational use across multiple languages with blind and low-vision communities in countries including India, Brazil, Singapore, and Indonesia; it does not publish a complete supported-language list in the cited materials.

How to use Guided Vision in Gemini Live
- Meet the baseline requirements. Use an Android device running Android 9 or later in a region and language where Gemini Live is supported. Update the Gemini app and Android system software.
- Turn on the setting. In the Gemini mobile app, open settings and enable Use Guided Vision in Live.
- Start Gemini Live. Open a Live conversation, then choose the option to share the phone camera.
- Ask for the task you need. For example, ask Gemini to read a label, describe a room, identify colors, or help locate an object.
- Follow framing prompts. If Gemini asks you to pan, tilt, move closer, or step back, adjust the phone and continue the conversation.
Google’s Android Accessibility Help page documents the setup and access options: Get audio descriptions with Guided Vision in Gemini Live.

Opening it with Android accessibility controls
- Add an Android floating accessibility button, enable a two-finger swipe gesture, or assign a press of both volume keys.
- With TalkBack, open the TalkBack menu with a three-finger tap and select Guided Vision.
Availability and compatibility
Google specifies Android 9 and later where Gemini Live is supported by region and language. That does not mean every Android 9-or-newer phone has the feature: Google says Guided Vision is rolling out gradually, and a compatible device may not yet show the setting. The available documentation does not provide a complete list of handset models, countries, or languages.
- Update the Gemini app.
- Install available Android system updates.
- Confirm that Gemini Live itself is available for your account, region, and language.
- Check Gemini settings for Use Guided Vision in Live; its absence may indicate that rollout has not reached your account.
Safety limits you should understand
Google explicitly warns that Guided Vision can make mistakes. It is an assistive utility, not a medical device, mobility aid, safe-travel guide, navigation system, or obstacle-detection tool. Do not use it as a replacement for a white cane, trained guide, established mobility aid, or human assistance. Continue to follow safe-travel practices and rely on tools intended for mobility and navigation.
In practical terms, a description of a doorway, curb, vehicle, person, label, or object may be incomplete or wrong. Treat the output as supplementary information, especially where an error could affect health, travel, machinery, medication, food safety, or personal security.
What Google says about development
Google says it worked with Aira and used “tens of thousands of hours” of visual data interpretation to train Gemini Live for conversational real-world context. It also says more than 1,000 members of Aira’s Trusted Tester network helped stress-test and refine the model, while Aira specialists helped establish and evaluate safety guardrails.

How Guided Vision compares with Apple’s 2025 accessibility announcement
Apple’s May 13, 2025 announcement covered several accessibility features with different hardware and interaction models. Apple did not announce one feature that is a direct, feature-for-feature match for Guided Vision.
| Comparison point | Google Guided Vision | Apple features announced in 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Primary platform | Gemini mobile app on compatible Android devices; Android 9 or later where Gemini Live is supported, with gradual rollout. | Apple announced features across Mac, iPhone-linked workflows, and visionOS; availability depends on the specific feature and Apple platform. |
| Interaction model | Camera sharing inside a Gemini Live voice conversation, with spoken descriptions and follow-up questions. | Separate tools: Magnifier for Mac, Accessibility Reader, and Live Recognition in visionOS, rather than one shared conversational camera feature. |
| Examples of help | Read labels and menus, describe surroundings, identify colors and patterns, find nearby objects, and give verbal framing guidance. | Magnifier for Mac can use an iPhone Continuity Camera or attached USB camera; Accessibility Reader provides a customizable reading presentation; visionOS Live Recognition can describe surroundings, find objects, and read documents for VoiceOver users. |
| Assistive-technology path | Gemini settings, Android accessibility controls, and TalkBack access through the TalkBack menu. | Apple described integration with VoiceOver for Live Recognition and an API for approved apps to provide live, person-to-person visual interpretation. |
| Published safety boundary | Google says it can make mistakes and is not for navigation, obstacle detection, mobility, or medical use. | Apple’s cited announcement describes feature capabilities but does not establish that these products are equivalent to Google’s safety-limited Guided Vision utility. |
| Availability status in the announcements | Google says rollout is gradual, so an eligible Android version alone does not guarantee access. | Apple described features coming later in 2025; the announcement itself is not a guarantee that every feature was immediately available on every supported device. |
Apple’s announcement is at Apple Newsroom. Comparing the products by shared purpose alone would obscure important differences in device, modality, and scope.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Where this fits in Google’s Gemini visual-assistance history
Google’s August 20, 2025 Gemini Live update described camera sharing and visual guidance that could highlight objects on screen. Google said that capability would arrive on Pixel 10 when those phones went on sale August 28, roll out to other Android devices that week, and expand to iOS in following weeks. That announcement shows earlier Gemini visual-help work, but it does not establish that the general feature was identical to the later Guided Vision accessibility experience. The earlier announcement is available at Google’s Gemini Live updates post.

Answers to practical questions
Can Gemini read a food label or a low-lit menu?
Google lists nutrition labels, menus, appliance displays, and other text as intended examples. Hold the camera so the text is visible, follow any framing instructions, and verify critical details because Gemini may misread text or context.
Can it help find an object with my phone camera?
Yes, finding items such as a dropped earbud or something in a crowded cabinet is one of Google’s examples. It is not an obstacle-detection or navigation function.
How do I turn it on with TalkBack?
Open the TalkBack menu with a three-finger tap and select Guided Vision. The Gemini app must also have access to the feature through its gradual rollout.
Can Guided Vision help with navigation?
No. Google says Guided Vision is not intended for navigation or obstacle detection. Continue using established mobility aids and safe-travel practices.
