They are not one integrated productivity system, and “open-source” is not equally applicable to every app: Everything is officially freeware, while the current Notepad++ license was not verified here. The other projects publish open-source licensing or descriptions in the sources linked below.

Everything: the fastest way to find files by name
Voidtools says Everything builds a database of file and folder names, generally in seconds, and monitors file-system changes. That makes it a focused Windows alternative to browsing through nested folders when you remember part of a name but not its location.
What it searches
Name and path searches are indexed. You can search file contents, but content is not indexed, so those searches are slower. Treat Everything as a filename finder first, not a full-text document index.
Open-source status
Voidtools describes Everything as freeware; the cited FAQ does not classify it as open source. It is therefore included for its utility, not as a verified open-source project.

7-Zip: a go-to tool for archives
7-Zip’s official site describes high-compression 7z support, Windows Shell integration and a command-line version. The site lists release 26.03, dated 2026-09-03, with Windows 11 compatibility.
Create versus open
7-Zip can create 7z and common archive formats such as ZIP, and it can extract many more, including RAR and ISO. Extraction support does not mean it creates every format it can open. Its licensing is mixed: the project describes itself as free software with open-source components and licensing terms that vary by component.
When it fits
Use it when a download arrives as an unfamiliar archive, when Windows’ built-in extraction is insufficient, or when you need repeatable command-line archive operations.

Ditto: the clipboard history that prevents lost copies
Ditto’s project README describes a Windows clipboard manager that stores copied items so they can be retrieved later. It supports text, images, HTML and custom formats.

Ordinary clipboard behavior keeps replacing the previous item. Ditto lets you reopen an earlier copy instead of returning to the source document and copying it again. That is particularly useful when assembling notes, code, form responses or repeated snippets.
Project status
The repository includes a GPL-3.0 license. Because clipboard history can contain passwords or personal data, review retention and privacy settings before using it on a shared or managed PC.
WinDirStat: a visual guide to disk space
The WinDirStat repository identifies the application as a disk-usage analyzer and cleanup tool. Its treemap represents files and folders by area, making unusually large directories visible at a glance.
A safe cleanup workflow
- Scan the drive or folder you want to understand.
- Use the treemap and directory list to identify large files and folders.
- Open the location in Explorer and confirm what each item is used for.
- Delete only files you recognize and no longer need, then empty the Recycle Bin if appropriate.
The visualization is evidence about storage consumption, not a recommendation to remove everything large. WinDirStat is licensed GPL v3 or later according to its project materials.
Notepad++: a no-fuss editor for everyday text
Notepad++ is useful for plain-text notes, snippets and configuration files when a full word processor adds unnecessary formatting. The source description highlights tabs, syntax highlighting and search, which cover the common tasks of opening several files, distinguishing code or configuration syntax, and finding or replacing text.

- Editing text that must remain unformatted.
- Keeping several small files open in one window.
- Inspecting logs, scripts and configuration files with syntax coloring and search.

Why it remains a practical default
VLC is useful when media arrives in an unfamiliar container, sits on physical media, or is available as a network stream. The VideoLAN project says VLC has been downloaded billions of times; that undated project statement is not an independently audited adoption statistic.
How to assemble a small, simple toolkit
Install only the utility that matches a problem you actually encounter:
- Lost files: Everything for indexed name and path searches.
- Compressed downloads: 7-Zip for broad extraction and archive creation.
- Repeated copying: Ditto for recoverable clipboard history.
- Low disk space: WinDirStat to map storage before cleanup.
- Plain text or configuration work: Notepad++.
- Uncooperative media: VLC for local, disc, streamed or device playback.
The common thread is narrow scope. Each app adds one dependable capability without requiring you to redesign an entire workflow around it.
