A peer-reviewed 2026 study models Venus’s lower haze as being sustained by a steady supply of cosmic dust: tiny solid particles delivered from space. The model reproduces the particle sizes measured by Venus entry probes, but it does not directly trace individual grains from space into the haze.

What is the haze beneath Venus’s clouds?

Venus has a roughly 20-kilometre-thick layer of tiny, involatile particles between its surface and its main cloud deck. Researchers have known about this lower haze for decades, but its source had remained uncertain. It is distinct from the planet’s brighter main clouds, which are largely made of sulfuric-acid droplets. Nature’s 2026 account describes the layer and its scale.

How could cosmic dust sustain the haze?

In a study published in Nature Astronomy on 13 April 2026, Hiroki Karyu and colleagues combined a particle-formation framework with a Venus cloud microphysics model. Their result indicates that continuous cosmic-dust influx is sufficient to sustain the lower haze with the particle-size distribution observed by entry probes. The study’s abstract puts the finding this way: “Here we incorporate a self-consistent particle formation framework into a Venus cloud microphysics model and show that the continuous influx of cosmic dust is sufficient to sustain this lower haze layer with the particle size distribution observed by the entry probes.” Read the paper in Nature Astronomy.

Here, “cosmic dust” means interplanetary solid particles, not a haze made of light. NASA describes such dust as debris from asteroid collisions and comet material. It has also reported a dust ring near Venus’s orbit, evidence that interplanetary dust is present in the planet’s orbital neighborhood: NASA’s account of the Venus-orbit dust ring.

What happens to the particles after they form?

The model’s proposed sequence is that incoming dust supplies involatile material from which lower-haze particles form. Atmospheric circulation can then transport those particles upward, where they may serve as condensation nuclei for droplets in the main cloud deck. The authors also find the particles enriched in magnesium and iron. That metal content makes iron a plausible contributor to Venus’s long-unidentified ultraviolet absorber, but the study does not identify the absorber’s chemistry completely.

How strong is the evidence—and what remains unknown?

The explanation is model-supported and anchored to entry-probe measurements: the modeled particle sizes match the observed distribution. It demonstrates that cosmic-dust influx can sustain the haze, not that researchers have directly sampled incoming dust at Venus or traced individual grains into particular haze particles. No single headline dust-influx rate is reported in the paper’s abstract.

There is supporting context from an independent line of analysis. A 2025 reanalysis of Pioneer Venus Large Probe data, recorded by NASA’s Technical Reports Server, reports water, iron sulfate and sulfuric acid in Venus aerosols, and suggests iron and magnesium could have cosmic origins: NASA Technical Reports Server record. That finding is consistent with a cosmic contribution, but it does not by itself establish the source of the lower haze.

The 2026 study is published in Nature Astronomy, volume 10, pages 964–971: bibliographic record and paper.
