The best running pants for you are the pair that suits your preferred fit, weather, storage needs and run—not a universally “best” model. Fitted tights offer a streamlined feel; relaxed pants allow more airflow. Compare fabric protection, pocket layout, reflective details and inseam before choosing.
Start with fit: tights or relaxed pants?
Both fitted tights and looser running pants can work. Choose the silhouette that lets you move freely without fabric bunching, snagging or distracting you. Nike’s running-pants guide, last updated April 15, 2024, says the choice depends on the type of run, temperature, weather and personal fit preferences. It quotes Nike product line manager Meg Croze: “Both silhouettes can be great for running, so the choice comes down to personal preference.”
- Fitted tights: A close, streamlined fit that keeps loose fabric out of the way.
- Relaxed pants or joggers: A looser alternative that can provide more airflow. Check that extra fabric does not catch or bunch as you run.
Neither description establishes that one silhouette improves performance. Try to match the cut to your comfort and conditions.
Match the fabric to the weather
Product descriptions use terms such as breathable, stretchy, wind-resistant and water-repellent to describe different features. Look for the ones that address your run: ventilation and stretch for movement, or wind and light-rain protection when conditions call for them. Water-repellent and water-resistant descriptions do not mean waterproof.

- For airflow: Nike’s Stride Plus Men’s Repel Woven Running Pants have mesh vents behind the knees. The US page describes the fabric as lightweight and water-repellent.
- For stretch and transitional conditions: Brooks’ Dash Pant is described as four-way stretch with a wind- and water-resistant panel. Brooks lists warmups, cool-downs, layering, everyday runs and transitional weather among its intended uses.
- For light rain and wind: Janji’s Transit Tech Pant is described as lightweight, breathable and wind-resistant, with a durable water-repellent (DWR) finish intended to shed light rain.
Check pocket layout and visibility
Count and placement matter less than whether the pockets close securely and fit what you plan to carry. Manufacturer descriptions identify these different layouts:
- Nike Stride Plus: Three zippered pockets; Nike says the rear pocket fits most phones and has an internal moisture barrier. The page also lists reflective details.
- Brooks Dash: Zippered side pockets and an internal pocket.
- Janji Transit Tech: Hand pockets with an integrated key loop, plus an additional side zip pocket.
If you run in low light, reflective details are worth considering; adidas also recommends looking for them. They are not a guarantee of safety, so do not treat reflective clothing as a substitute for paying attention to your surroundings.

Use inseam and size guidance to check length
Do not assume that “regular” means the same length across brands. Brooks lists a 29-inch regular inseam and a 31-inch tall inseam for the Dash Pant. Janji lists a 29-inch regular and 31-inch long inseam for the Transit Tech Pant, and recommends the long option for people 6 feet and taller. That height guidance is specific to Janji’s product.
Before buying, consult the product’s size chart and fit description. Check the stated inseam against a pair of pants whose length you already like, and confirm whether the brand offers a longer option.

A practical way to choose
- Decide how you want the pants to fit. Choose close-fitting tights or a relaxed cut, then rule out anything that restricts movement or bunches.
- Consider your usual conditions. For warm runs, look for ventilation and breathable fabric. For wind or light rain, check for product-specific wind-resistant or water-repellent features; do not infer waterproofing.
- List what you carry. Confirm that the pockets close, fit your phone or keys and keep the items secure in the locations you prefer.
- Check low-light details. Look for reflective elements if useful for your routes, while remembering they do not ensure safety.
- Verify the length. Read the size chart, fit notes and inseam options for that specific brand and model.
