Compare fibre and construction, size, weight and warmth, intended use, and the sewn-in care label before buying. Woolmark reports that wool blankets have shown better thermal insulation, moisture transport and moisture buffering than a cotton/acrylic blanket, but that comparison does not establish how every blanket will perform for every sleeper.
Why choose a wool bed blanket?
Wool is valued for warmth and its ability to buffer moisture. The Woolmark Company says wool can absorb up to 35% of its weight before feeling wet; this is a general claim about wool fibre, not a performance measurement for a particular blanket. Woolmark also reports that wool blankets have shown better thermal insulation, moisture transport and moisture buffering than a cotton/acrylic blanket. The cited page does not give a blanket-specific numerical effect size, and its comparison should not be generalized to every cotton or synthetic blanket.
These properties can make wool worth considering if you want an additional layer with warmth and moisture handling. They do not guarantee a particular level of comfort: fibre, weave or pile, weight, room conditions and personal preference all matter.
What to compare before buying
Fibre and construction
“Wool blanket” alone does not tell you the fibre grade, weave, pile or blend. Read the product description and label for the actual materials and construction. Those details affect feel, drape, weight and care, so avoid judging a blanket by the wool label alone.

Dimensions and intended use
Check the blanket’s stated measurements against your mattress and how you plan to use it: as a bed layer, a cover at the foot of the bed or an extra layer for colder nights. A blanket intended for a particular bed size may not provide the same overhang on every mattress.
Weight and warmth
Compare the stated weight or warmth information where available, rather than assuming all wool blankets feel equally warm. Consider your bedroom temperature and whether you want a lightweight layer or a heavier one. Product descriptions do not use a universal warmth scale, so treat brand-to-brand labels as guidance, not directly comparable measurements.

Care requirements
Read the sewn-in care label before you buy if washing convenience matters. Wool blanket construction and care instructions vary; machine washing is appropriate only when the item’s label allows it. A blanket that requires more careful handling may be a poor fit if you need frequent, easy laundering.
How to care for a wool blanket
The blanket’s own care label takes precedence over general advice. Woolmark’s guidance recommends these practices:

- Handle stains gently: Blot liquid promptly with warm water and mild detergent rather than rubbing or scrubbing.
- Brush only when needed: Use a soft brush gently, following the surface grain.
- Wash only if permitted: If the label allows machine washing, Woolmark recommends a gentle wool cycle with cold water and a specified wool detergent. Follow the label if it gives different instructions.
- Dry with support: Woolmark advises drying flat over a clothesline to support the blanket’s wet weight, away from direct sunlight. It advises against tumble drying.
- Store carefully: Keep the blanket in a cool, dark place.
For a heavily soiled blanket, use the care method specified on its label rather than assuming it can be machine washed.

- Decide whether you want a bed layer, a foot-of-bed cover or an extra layer for colder nights.
- Compare each candidate’s fibre content and construction, then check its dimensions against your bed.
- Use stated weight or warmth information to narrow the options, keeping in mind that labels may not follow one shared scale.
- Check the sewn-in care instructions and choose a blanket whose maintenance requirements suit you.
There is no universal winner established here: no individual blankets were tested or ranked. The useful choice is the one whose materials, fit, warmth and care instructions match your needs.

- WOVEN WITH REAL ALPACA & SHEEP WOOL - ZERO SYNTHETIC: A 50/50 blend of alpaca and Peruvian sheep wool (Merino/Dorset breeds), woven at a family-run mill in the Peruvian Andes from fiber sourced directly from Andean farmers. No acrylic, no polyester fill; only the edge binding is polyester, for strength. Alpaca gives it softness you won't find in a regular wool blanket. The sheep wool adds loft and body. Check the fiber content on any "alpaca" blanket you compare.
- HEAVYWEIGHT, BREATHABLE, REVERSIBLE: Wool traps heat without trapping moisture, so you stay warm without waking up sweaty. Both sides are brushed for a soft, lofty nap, and each side shows a different stripe arrangement in natural alpaca colors, so you can flip it to change the look of the bed. Use it on its own on cool nights, layer it over a comforter, or take it to the cabin.
- WHAT TO EXPECT FROM REAL WOOL: Your blanket arrives with a natural alpaca and sheep wool scent that fades within a couple of weeks. That is the scent of alpaca and sheep wool that has not been heavily processed or chemically deodorized. It has a textured wool feel, not the slippery softness of synthetic fleece, and some natural shedding at first that lessens with time and use. These are signs of real wool - not defects.
- FULL/QUEEN SIZE, ABOUT 86 x 82 IN, APPROX. 6 LBS: A true bedding blanket. Fits a Full or Queen mattress. Earth Tones stripes in natural alpaca shades. Each blanket is woven in small batches, so size and weight vary slightly between production runs. Also available in Twin and King.
- EASY CARE - MACHINE WASH AT HOME, OR DRY CLEAN: Air it out and spot clean as needed. To wash, use a large tub or your machine's gentle cycle with no agitation, cool water, and a mild wool wash (we recommend Outback Gold Wool Wash). Lay flat to dry away from direct heat. Dry cleaning is also fine. From Desert Breeze Distributing, a woman-led, family-owned US small business since 2013. Every blanket is inspected and packaged with care by our team in Idaho.
