Spoilers for the season-one premiere of War: Johnny Warren, played by Archie Renaux, is the mole inside Taylor & Byrne. He takes a junior job with the firm representing Carla Duval so he can pass case intelligence to Cathcarts & Sons, which represents her estranged husband, Morgan Henderson. Renaux says Johnny’s ambition and need for work—not a carefully considered moral stance—drive the betrayal.
Who is the mole in War?
The premiere’s reveal is Johnny Warren. He joins Taylor & Byrne, Carla Duval’s legal team, while secretly working for Cathcarts & Sons, the firm representing Morgan Henderson. His position gives Cathcarts access to information from inside the opposing legal team.

The deception sits at the center of the drama’s divorce battle: Morgan, a tech entrepreneur, and Carla, a film star, are fighting through rival firms as well as through their breakup.
Why does Johnny betray Taylor & Byrne?
Renaux describes Johnny as returning to London after a problematic period working as a lawyer in New York. He needs a job and sees the offer as his opening. As Renaux puts it, Johnny is “totally blinded by his own ambition” and “doesn’t really [have] time to think about morals just yet.”

That makes the betrayal a decision rooted in professional pressure and self-interest, rather than a fully worked-out ethical position. The premiere’s reveal shows what Johnny has done; Renaux’s explanation clarifies how readily he puts ambition ahead of loyalty.
What did Archie Renaux say about playing Johnny?
Renaux said he was excited by the first two scripts, recalling: “Honestly, the first two scripts that I read, I was so happy and excited [by them]. And I was really like, ‘Oh my god, I have to do this part. It’s so much fun.’”

He also called Johnny “the eyes and the ears for the audience in the two offices.” Because Johnny moves between the rival firms, viewers can follow both sides of the case through one character. That access also makes the mole reveal consequential: his position is not just a surprise, but a way for the series to connect the two workplaces.
How do the rival law firms differ?
Cathcarts & Sons is the established firm, with a reputation Nina Sosanya described as stretching back “a couple of hundred years,” grounded in “tradition” and “winning.” Taylor & Byrne is the newer practice trying to establish itself. The contrast is between inherited standing and the drive to prove a newer firm’s legitimacy.

Their approaches reflect that divide. Cathcarts uses Johnny to gather intelligence from inside its opponent; Taylor & Byrne is building its practice while representing Carla. The case is therefore a contest between legal teams as well as a personal dispute.
Why is the divorce framed as a business conflict?
Dominic West described Morgan’s maneuver as “a business move” with “a business strategy behind it.” That framing makes the divorce more than a private breakup: the clients and their lawyers are maneuvering for advantage, and Johnny’s infiltration is part of that strategy.

Creator George Kay said the production consulted Catherine, a lawyer who works on high-powered divorce cases. Kay initially considered drawing on celebrity divorces, but said that idea “went out the window after a while” as the writers developed their own schemes. The story’s legal intrigue is therefore presented as its own fictional conflict, rather than a direct retelling of a particular celebrity case.
