For most Windows PCs with 4 GB of RAM, leave the paging file set to automatic management. Microsoft says Windows’ default virtual-memory setting should perform optimally in most cases, and its support guidance does not prescribe one page-file size for every 4 GB computer. Change it only for a specific storage or application need—not on the assumption that a larger page file will make a PC as fast as one with more physical RAM.

What should the paging file size be with 4 GB of RAM?

Start with Windows managing the paging file automatically. That is Microsoft’s recommended default for most situations. A fixed size can be appropriate in particular circumstances, but the right choice depends on the application, available disk space, and system requirements; RAM capacity alone does not determine it.

Microsoft’s Access support article gives 1.5 times installed RAM as one possible fixed-size example and notes that running several large applications may call for more. Applied to 4 GB of RAM, that example is 6 GB (commonly entered as 6,144 MB in Windows). It is an example from guidance about possible Access performance situations, not a universal recommendation for all 4 GB Windows PCs. Microsoft: Help Access run faster

Microsoft: Change virtual memory size

When to consider a manual change

Consider changing the setting only when you can identify a concrete need. Microsoft’s Access guidance names limited free space on the drive currently used for virtual memory and the availability of a faster, less-used local drive as possible reasons to specify another drive. It also discusses fixed sizing as an option in some cases, rather than a default for everyone.

  • An application has a specific requirement: Follow that application’s current requirements rather than applying a general multiplier.
  • The current drive is short on free space: Check available storage before assigning a fixed paging-file size. Microsoft notes that low disk space can also contribute to slow performance or update problems. Microsoft: Free up drive space in Windows
  • Another local drive may be a better location: Microsoft identifies a faster, less-used local drive as a possible alternative. This is not a reason to move the file to any drive without considering its speed and workload.
  • Crash-dump behavior matters: If your system has a particular crash-dump requirement, check current Windows documentation for the applicable configuration before changing virtual-memory settings.

If a computer is managed by an employer or school, an administrator may control the setting.

Will a larger paging file make a 4 GB PC faster?

Not in the same way as adding physical RAM. A paging file provides disk-based backing for virtual memory and may help meet some software or system needs, but Microsoft notes that RAM is faster than disks. Increasing paging-file capacity does not make disk access as fast as memory, and no cited benchmark establishes a performance gain from a particular page-file size on 4 GB PCs.

If the computer remains slow, check which applications are using memory, review startup and background activity, and check free storage. If those measures do not address the workload, see whether the exact computer model supports a physical memory upgrade.

How 4 GB compares with Microsoft’s memory guidance

These figures concern physical RAM, not paging-file size. Microsoft lists 4 GB as the Windows 11 minimum, while noting that some features and apps may need more. Its general guidance says at least 4 GB is suitable for primarily browsing, documents, or streaming; recommends 8 GB to keep a device running long term; and says 16 GB or more may suit photo or video editing and other high-performance projects. Publication years for those figures are not established on the cited pages.

Meeting an operating-system minimum does not guarantee a smooth experience with every application or workload. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; check Microsoft’s current support information if you are deciding whether to keep using that version. Before upgrading physical RAM

An upgrade may be a better response to a sustained memory shortage than trying to make disk-backed virtual memory behave like RAM, but compatibility is specific to the computer. Check the laptop or motherboard model, supported memory generation and maximum capacity, whether memory is soldered, and whether an upgrade is supported before buying anything.
