What changed for Dragon Age: Inquisition on Steam Deck?
Valve’s Proton Experimental changelog lists the change, “Fixed controllers not working in Dragon Age: Inquisition,” among updates available as of 25 September 2026. Separately, SteamDB’s game listing shows a Playable rating and a compatibility test timestamp of 14 September 2026. Steam Deck HQ reported that the game was upgraded from Unsupported to Playable after the controller fix appeared in Proton Experimental.
These are related developments, but the Proton changelog and the Steam Deck rating are separate records. The changelog documents a controller fix; it does not itself announce the rating change.
What does the Playable rating mean?
Valve defines Playable this way: “The game may require some manual tweaking by the user to play.” That can include selecting a community controller configuration or using the touchscreen to navigate a launcher. Verified is a stricter category that considers controller support and appropriate input icons, display and text legibility, seamless navigation, and Proton or middleware support. In other words, the rating indicates that the game can be played on Deck with possible adjustments; it is not a promise that every step works without intervention or that the game meets Verified criteria.

The game-specific compatibility details list several practical caveats alongside the Playable rating:

- Controller prompts may occasionally show icons for a mouse, keyboard, or a controller other than the Deck’s.
- You may need to open the on-screen keyboard manually when entering text.
SteamDB’s compatibility details also include both a caveat about the default controller configuration and a positive default-controller result. That makes it prudent to treat controller behavior as potentially setup-dependent rather than assume every input scenario works identically.
How should you approach controller setup?
The official Proton Experimental note establishes that Valve recorded a controller fix, but it does not provide a universal setup recipe or guarantee identical results across SteamOS versions, game settings, and launcher behavior. Older and newer community reports describe varying combinations of Proton versions, community layouts, and in-game control selection.

If the Deck does not recognize your controls as expected, check that the game is set to use gamepad input rather than mouse-and-keyboard input, then review the controller layout selected for the game. Community reports have also mentioned EA App launcher problems and users getting results with different Proton versions, including GE-Proton. Those accounts are individual experiences, not controlled tests or requirements for every player. The Experimental controller fix means an older custom Proton build should not be treated as universally necessary.

The rating and changelog are good news for players who previously encountered controller trouble, but they do not settle every compatibility question. Launcher behavior can differ between setups, and Valve’s rating leaves room for manual adjustments. For text entry, be prepared to invoke the virtual keyboard yourself; during play, expect that some prompts may not match the Deck’s controls.
