Audible announced three experimental features on October 1, 2026: Character Guide for spoiler-free cast help, Interactive Story for AI conversation with selected characters, and Visual Explorer for images and context during playback. They are currently a limited beta for Audible customers in the United States and United Kingdom, with a small initial catalog.

Character Guide: follow the cast without spoilers
Character Guide is designed for stories with large or confusing casts. On the player page, it identifies who is speaking as the production progresses. Opening a character card shows a performer’s headshot and biography, with information intended to avoid revealing later plot developments.

Audible says listeners will eventually be able to ask questions about a production as the story unfolds. That conversational question feature is described as a future capability, not a generally available promise for every title in the beta.

Interactive Story: can you talk to an Audible character?
Yes, but only through a separate, selected-title bonus experience. In Audible’s first example, Renfield from Dracula opens the scene, assigns the listener a role, and explains a goal and stakes. You then provide your own words and receive a real-time response.

The system combines generative AI, conversational design and sound production. Creators define the opening scenes, turning points and character persona, giving the interaction boundaries intended to keep it consistent with the creator’s vision. Your conversation therefore belongs to an AI role-play layer rather than the recorded audiobook narrative.
What Interactive Story is not
- It is not an AI replacement for the narrator or the original performance.
- It is not announced for every Audible title.
- It is not evidence that every character can answer unrestricted questions about the entire book.
Visual Explorer: listen while exploring context
Visual Explorer is intended for moments when pictures or background information can clarify what you are hearing. Audible says selected moments can display imagery and contextual details without taking you out of the narrative.

The cited early example is The Cultural Tutor’s Grand Tour: The Story of Europe in Six Cities, where listeners can explore landmarks, historical figures and places as the program moves through them. The feature is therefore closer to an in-player reference layer than to a conventional audiobook chapter or a separate web search.
Availability, catalog limits and membership questions
Where the beta is running
All three features are in limited beta for Audible customers in the United States and United Kingdom. Audible says it will use feedback from customers and creators, then expand to additional stories where appropriate. TechCrunch described the initial catalog as small and reported that Audible plans to grow the beta over time.

Do you need an Audible membership?
Audible describes the test audience as Audible customers, so access requires an Audible account and a supported Audible experience. The announcement does not specify one universal membership tier, purchase rule or device list for every feature. Eligibility can therefore depend on your country, account, app or player version and the title itself; check the title’s current Audible listing and in-app availability rather than assuming that any membership unlocks all three tools.
Why a feature may not appear
- The title is not one of the selected beta productions.
- Your account is outside the United States or United Kingdom.
- Audible has not enabled the experiment for your account or current app/player.
- The feature is still being expanded and its catalog can change.

Audible’s December 2025 update added more detail about conversational search: 16 percent of Maven searches included format-specific criteria, and 15 percent of romance searches requested specific features or subgenres. Those figures describe Audible’s reported search behavior, not guarantees that a particular query will produce a match.

Audible Chief Content Officer Rachel Ghiazza said the features are intended to invite listeners into stories in ways that were previously unavailable. The practical test will be whether creator-guided AI remains useful without confusing the boundary between an authored performance and a generated interaction.
