If the slowdown started after installing an app or comes with unwanted ads, a suspicious app is another possibility. Work through the reversible checks below before deleting anything or seeking service; the menus and options can vary by Galaxy model and software version.
Why a Samsung Galaxy may lag
Lag is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Samsung lists outdated software, background apps, insufficient available memory, and temporary system errors among possible causes of slow or unresponsive performance. Full storage may also contribute: Samsung Singapore’s guidance, last updated September 5, 2024, describes full storage and outdated software as common causes of lag, glitches, freezing, or crashes, but does not quantify their effects or promise that freeing space will fix a particular device.
Available storage and memory (RAM) are different things. Storage holds apps and files; memory is used by apps and processes while the device is running. Check them separately rather than assuming that clearing photos will solve a memory issue—or that closing apps will create storage space. Samsung also notes that instructions and screens can differ by model, region, Android version, and One UI version.
Try these low-risk checks first
1. Install available software updates
Open Settings > Software update. Depending on your device, tap Download and install or Check for updates, then follow the on-screen instructions. Samsung says keeping a Galaxy device updated helps improve performance, stability, and compatibility. An update may help, but it is not a guaranteed fix for every slowdown.

2. Close recent apps and check memory
Close apps you are not using, then see whether the device responds better. You can also look for Settings > Device care > Memory > Clean now. Samsung says background apps may affect performance; this Device care action closes unused background apps and frees memory. The exact path or label may differ on your device.
3. Restart the Galaxy
A restart can close running apps and refresh the system, which may clear a temporary problem. If the device is responsive, use its usual power menu. If it is unresponsive, Samsung’s current US instructions are to press and hold the Side key and Volume down key together for more than seven seconds, until the device restarts. Button names or behavior may vary across models.

4. Review storage before removing anything
Open Settings > Device care and review the storage information, if available. If space is low, decide deliberately which files or apps you want to remove. Back up important personal files before deleting them; do not clear data or remove files blindly. Samsung’s Singapore guidance says freeing storage can help performance, but it does not establish that low storage is the cause of an individual device’s lag.
Check for suspicious apps if lag began after an installation
If the slowdown started after you installed a third-party app, or you are seeing unwanted ads, review recently installed apps and Samsung’s built-in safety options. Samsung warns that some apps display fake messages such as “Your phone is slow” or “Battery is draining fast” to persuade you to download more apps. Treat those pop-ups as untrusted prompts, not as a reliable diagnosis or a reason to install a cleaner.

- Review Device care notifications and, where available, check deep sleeping apps or App safety in Diagnostics.
- Uninstall apps identified as suspicious, using the device’s current app settings.
- Consider Auto Blocker, which Samsung says can block apps downloaded from unverified sources outside the Play Store or Galaxy Store when enabled. Availability and menu paths depend on model and software version.
Samsung’s security instructions vary by Android version and model, so follow the labels shown on your device rather than relying on a path that may not match it.
Run Galaxy diagnostics
Samsung Members can run individual phone checks or a full test; the available list varies by Galaxy device. Samsung’s US diagnostics guide lists checks that can include battery status, official software, sensors, buttons, touchscreen, Wi-Fi, mobile network, and other components. In Device care, you may also find performance optimization and views for battery use, storage, memory, and app protection.

Samsung specifies that Device care diagnostics are available on Galaxy devices running Android 12 or later. If you do not see a particular test, it may not be available for your device or software version. A diagnostic result can help narrow down an issue, but it does not by itself mean that every slow phone needs repair or replacement.

If updating, closing apps, restarting, reviewing storage, and checking relevant app-safety options do not resolve the lag, Samsung’s US troubleshooting guidance directs users to contact Samsung Support. To make the conversation more useful, note when the slowdown occurs, any recent app installs or updates, the available storage shown on the device, and diagnostic results. These details can help describe the problem; Samsung does not state that they are required for support.
