Before the ground freezes, focus on three things: water dry soil, refresh mulch without piling it against the trunk, and protect the trunk from winter injury and animal damage. Check conditions rather than relying on a fixed calendar date; freeze timing varies by region, species and weather.
1. Water young trees while the soil is dry
Young trees need supplemental water during dry fall weather while their roots are still growing. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach says young woody plants may need supplemental watering for 2–4 years after planting. Check both the original root ball and the soil around it: if either is dry, water deeply. Stop when the ground freezes, and avoid keeping the soil saturated.
As temperatures fall, water less frequently rather than following a summer schedule. Purdue Extension urban forestry specialist Ben McCallister recommends watering evergreens slowly 1–2 times a week until the soil freezes; treat that as regional guidance, adjusting for rainfall, soil moisture, tree size and local conditions.
Choose a watering method that reaches the roots
- Soaker hose: Lay it around the root zone to distribute water gradually. Check the soil in several places, including the root ball, to confirm water is reaching the full area rather than only one spot.
- Watering bag: A bag releases water slowly near the trunk, which can help limit runoff. Check the soil beyond the bag as well; water still needs to reach the surrounding root zone.
2. Refresh mulch, leaving the trunk clear
Spread about 2–4 inches of wood chips or shredded bark over the root zone, following Iowa State University Extension and Outreach guidance. Purdue Extension recommends a 2–3 inch layer. Either recommendation calls for a broad, even layer—not a mound. Keep mulch away from the trunk: Iowa State advises at least six inches of clearance, while Purdue says to leave about a two-inch gap.

A doughnut-shaped ring helps conserve moisture, moderate soil temperature, suppress weeds and keep mowers away from the trunk. Do not pile mulch against the bark: Purdue Extension warns that “volcano mulching” is never recommended.
3. Protect the trunk and keep animals out
Wrap young trunks for winter
In late fall, Iowa State University Extension recommends wrapping young trunks at least 36 inches up the trunk, then removing the wrap in spring. A removable guard can also help reduce sunscald on young or thin-barked trees, according to Purdue Extension.

Match the barrier to the animal
- Deer: Iowa State recommends cages or stakes at least 4 feet high.
- Rabbits and rodents: Use a smaller cage or chicken wire suited to the animal you are trying to exclude.
Choose a guard that fits without constricting the trunk, allows airflow, and can be removed for spring inspection. Barriers reduce exposure to browsing, but no guard guarantees protection from all winter injury or animal damage.

Skip routine structural pruning in fall. Iowa State explains that pruning can stimulate new growth that may not harden before winter. Save major structural work for late winter or early spring. Removing a dead, damaged or diseased limb may be appropriate; for large, high or uncertain cuts, Purdue advises hiring an ISA Certified Arborist.
