Voyager 1 did not lose its radio connection to Earth. Its flight data subsystem (FDS), which packages information for transmission, had corrupted memory that left the spacecraft’s science and engineering data unreadable. NASA worked around the damaged memory by moving software to spare locations. Engineering telemetry came back first in April 2024; usable science data from two instruments followed in May.
Why was Voyager 1 sending garbled data?
On November 14, 2023, Voyager 1 stopped sending readable science and engineering data. NASA controllers could still tell that the spacecraft was receiving commands and operating normally, and a signal was still reaching Earth. The problem was the information in that signal: the FDS could no longer package data into readable transmissions.
NASA’s April 4, 2024 diagnosis found that about 3% of the FDS memory was corrupted. Engineers suspected a failed memory chip, but NASA said the precise cause was uncertain. An energetic particle in space and decades of wear were among the possibilities; NASA did not establish that radiation had struck the chip.
How did NASA fix Voyager 1 from more than 15 billion miles away?
The damaged chip could not be repaired, so engineers devised a software workaround. They broke the affected code into smaller sections, moved those sections into unused FDS memory, adjusted them to work in the new locations, and updated the references that point to the code. The first priority was the software that packages engineering data.

- Find the damaged area: Engineers diagnosed corrupted FDS memory rather than a lost radio link.
- Relocate the code: They divided the affected software into sections and placed them in spare memory locations.
- Update the software links: They adjusted the code and changed references so the spacecraft could find and run it in its new locations.
- Restore engineering telemetry first: NASA sent the command on April 18, 2024, and received confirmation on April 20.
Voyager 1 was more than 15 billion miles (24 billion kilometers) from Earth. In NASA/JPL’s April 2024 account, a radio signal took about 22½ hours to travel one way and roughly 45 hours to make a round trip. That delay meant a command-and-response test took nearly two days, limiting how quickly engineers could diagnose and adjust the workaround. NASA/JPL’s account of the recovery describes the timeline and method.
What data came back, and when?
| Milestone | What NASA reported |
|---|---|
| April 22, 2024 | Voyager 1 returned usable engineering telemetry for the first time in five months. The data let the team check the spacecraft’s health and status. NASA Science’s April update. |
| May 22, 2024 | NASA reported usable science data from the plasma wave subsystem and magnetometer, two of Voyager 1’s four then-active instruments. Work continued on the cosmic ray subsystem and low-energy charged-particle instrument. NASA Science’s May update. |
Engineering telemetry and science data are different. Telemetry reports spacecraft condition and operation; science data are measurements from the instruments. Restoring the code that packaged engineering information got the team a first foothold, but it did not instantly restore every instrument’s data.

Did Voyager 1 resume all science operations?
NASA’s May 22, 2024 update documented usable science data from two of the four instruments active at that time, while work on the other two continued. That report establishes a staged recovery, not that all four instruments had returned usable data. Nor do the cited 2024 updates establish Voyager 1’s complete operational status in September 2026.
The episode shows why restoring a spacecraft this old is not a routine software repair. Voyager 1 launched in 1977 and is one of only two spacecraft to have entered interstellar space. As Voyager project scientist Linda Spilker put it, “This far into the mission, the engineering team is being faced with a lot of challenges for which we just don’t have a playbook.” NASA’s April 2024 report gives the mission context.
