A 2006 paper proposed a browser and markup language intended to let WAP and HTTP content coexist. It was a proposal, not evidence of a finished or widely used browser. The broader standards-based path to convergence was already defined in WAP 2.0: it added Internet protocols alongside the earlier WAP stack, rather than making the two systems identical.
What the 2006 browser proposal set out to do
In “An Internet Framework to Bring Coherence between WAP and HTTP Ensuring Better Mobile Internet Security”, Al-Mukaddim Khan Pathan, Md. Abdul Mottalib, and Minhaz Fahim Zibran described a proposed browser for content compliant with HTTP and WAP. The abstract also proposes a markup language that would let HTML and WML content coexist in one source file.
That describes an intended framework, not a verified product. The abstract does not establish that the browser or language was implemented, tested, deployed, or adopted, and it provides no evidence of measured security improvements.
Why gateways mattered in early WAP
Early WAP commonly used a protocol stack designed for constrained wireless environments. A gateway or proxy could sit between a mobile client and a web server, translating between the WAP-side protocols and the web’s HTTP and TCP/IP stack.

The WAP Architecture Specification describes this arrangement and names WSP, WTP, WTLS, and WDP on the WAP side. In simplified form:
Mobile client → WAP proxy or gateway → web server

The proxy could also perform functions such as encoding or decoding content, managing user-agent profiles, and caching. These were possible proxy functions, not a guarantee that every gateway performed all of them. Depending on the service and proxy selection, a client could also communicate directly rather than through a proxy.
What WAP 2.0 changed
WAP 2.0 took a coexistence approach. Its technical white paper describes support for Internet protocols including TCP, TLS, and HTTP while retaining the original WAP stack. It also defines XHTML Mobile Profile (XHTMLMP) for the application environment.

This let the specifications accommodate Internet-protocol connectivity where available while keeping the earlier stack available for networks and bearers where it remained useful. WAP 2.0 also provided managed backward compatibility for compliant WAP 1 content. It did not mean that every device, network, or service used the same protocols or could reach every other service.
Backward compatibility had limits
The WAP Forum’s technical FAQs describe compatibility as asymmetric. Under specified application options, WAP 2 devices could support WAP 1 services. WAP 1 devices, however, were not assured access to WAP 2 services: the Forum did not specify a transformation from WAP 2 markup to WML 1.

So “reconcile” is best understood as making protocols and content environments coexist through defined options—not as making WAP and HTTP interchangeable or guaranteeing that older handsets could use newer services.

The distinction matters because reaching a resource and interpreting its content are different tasks. The W3C’s Architecture of the World Wide Web describes a browser identifying a resource with a URI, exchanging messages using a protocol such as HTTP, and processing the returned representation with help from metadata such as Content-Type.

A framework spanning WAP and HTTP therefore has to address both the network exchange and the representation or application format. Adding HTTP support alone would not make every WAP-era content format work in a browser, just as a combined markup proposal would not by itself settle how a device connects to a server.
What the proposal does—and does not—establish
The 2006 abstract is evidence of an idea: a browser designed for WAP and HTTP, paired with a markup language intended to combine HTML and WML content. It does not establish implementation details, performance, security effectiveness, or real-world adoption. For the standards-level history, the better-supported account is that WAP 2.0 added Internet protocols and XHTMLMP while retaining the legacy stack and bounded compatibility provisions.
