It combines gentle air compression around the eyes, heat, vibration, blackout coverage and Bluetooth audio in a foldable, rechargeable mask. Ojai is intended as a relaxation product—not a treatment for digital eye strain or an eye disease.
What the GUNNAR Ojai system does
Announced September 30, 2026, Ojai is GUNNAR Optiks’ first product aimed at the period after screen use. The company positions its eyewear for time spent looking at displays; Ojai is meant for the recovery minutes when the screens are off.
Features in one 10-minute ritual
- Rhythmic air compression: inflatable sections apply changing pressure around the eye area.
- Heat: the system warms to approximately 43°C (109°F).
- Vibration: gentle vibration adds another relaxation sensation.
- Blackout coverage: the mask blocks light to make a deliberate screen-free pause easier.
- Bluetooth audio: you can play music, podcasts, meditation tracks or guided relaxation from a paired device.
- Five recovery modes: modes vary the combination and pattern of the recovery features.
- Foldable, rechargeable design: it is intended to be stored and carried rather than left at a desk.
The practical idea is simple: put the mask on, stop looking at displays, select a mode and spend about 10 minutes resting. It does not replace blinking, appropriate lighting, regular breaks or an eye examination when symptoms persist.
Does Ojai help tired eyes?
GUNNAR’s launch announcement reports a real-world pilot involving screen-intensive users. Participants rated their own symptoms before and after an Ojai session. The company reported that 94% experienced a high level of physical relaxation, 89% said their eyes felt more relaxed, and average discomfort ratings were approximately 56% lower immediately after a session across five eye- and vision-discomfort measures. At Day 30, 87% of respondents were using Ojai in 10-minute sessions, most often after work or before bed.
#1 Best Overall

Those figures describe participant experiences, not a controlled clinical trial. The announcement explicitly says the findings are self-reported before-and-after results, not clinical or medical-efficacy data. Ojai is not a medical device and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent a disease or medical condition. A short-term feeling of relief should not be interpreted as proof that the device changes the underlying cause of eye discomfort.
How Ojai compares with other options
| Option | When it is used | What it provides | Evidence and limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| GUNNAR Ojai | After screen use, with displays off | Compression, approximately 43°C heat, vibration, blackout and Bluetooth audio | Company-reported, self-reported pilot outcomes; not clinical efficacy evidence |
| Blue-light or computer glasses | While actively viewing a monitor or phone | Lens tint, coatings, wrap and focusing features intended to reduce glare, visual noise and related discomfort | Benefits depend on the specific lens and user; GUNNAR’s performance and survey figures are company claims |
| Conventional eye mask | Rest or sleep | Light blocking without active heat, compression, vibration or audio | Usually cheaper and simpler, but it does not reproduce Ojai’s features |
| Manual screen break | During or after work | Distance viewing, blinking, movement and rest at no equipment cost | Requires a routine and does not provide Ojai’s sensory features |
| Electronic eye massager | Typically during a dedicated break | May use massage, heat, pressure or vibration, depending on model | Feature sets, fit and evidence vary widely; compare the manufacturer’s specifications rather than assuming equivalence |
Ojai versus GUNNAR glasses
These products address different moments. Ojai is a screens-off recovery ritual. GUNNAR’s computer and gaming glasses are worn during screen use and use frame fit, lens power, tints and coatings to address issues such as glare, dryness, muscular strain, blue-light exposure and visual noise, according to GUNNAR.

- The preferred gaming glass for men and women, GUNNAR protects against symptoms stemming from prolonged screen-staring including migraines, headaches, dry eyes, blurry vision, negative effects of blue light exposure, cataracts and macular degeneration.
- Specs: lens width: 54 mm | nose: 16 mm | frame width: 136 mm | Temple: 135 mm | Weight: 22 grams. Gunnar produces ergonomically designed gaming Eyewear with a lightweight frame to give you a full day of comfortable screen viewing.
- Gunnar gaming glasses enhance performance and provide a competitive edge. Play better with styles designed for panoramic viewing and audio headset compatibility.
GUNNAR says its Amber tint blocks 65% of blue light at 450 nm and cites a separate study in which 96% of respondents reported eased digital-eye-strain symptoms after six weeks. Those are GUNNAR’s claims, not independent confirmation, and they should not be combined with the Ojai pilot results as if they were one study. Someone who needs vision correction, glare management or a comfortable way to work may consider appropriate eyewear; someone seeking a structured, light-free break may prefer Ojai. They can be complementary, but Ojai does not make screen-use glasses unnecessary.
Is the $99 price worth it?
GUNNAR lists Ojai at a $99 USD MSRP, and its official storefront also lists the Visual Recovery System at $99. Availability was announced through GUNNAR.com and selected retail partners. Reasons it may be worthwhile
- You want a repeatable, hands-off 10-minute transition out of work.
- Blackout, heat, pressure, vibration and audio are more motivating to you than simply closing your eyes.
- You will use it regularly after work or before bed, making the per-use cost reasonable over time.
- You value a foldable rechargeable device that can travel with you.
Reasons to skip it
- You mainly need help while looking at a screen; Ojai is not worn for active viewing.
- A normal eye mask, quiet room or scheduled break already gives you the rest you want.
- You are expecting treatment for persistent pain, blurred vision, headaches or another medical problem.
- You dislike pressure, warmth, vibration, enclosed masks or pairing audio over Bluetooth.
How to use Ojai after work or before bed
- Finish the task that requires a screen and put the phone or computer out of reach.
- Charge the mask and choose a comfortable, adjustable fit before starting.
- Pair Bluetooth audio if you want music, a podcast or guided relaxation; audio is optional.
- Select one of the five recovery modes and begin a roughly 10-minute session.
- Keep the room comfortable and stop if heat, pressure, vibration or the fit feels unpleasant.
- After the session, resume normal activities gradually rather than immediately returning to another bright display.
After work, the ritual can mark the end of computer time. Before bed, use it as a light-blocking relaxation step, while remembering that audio, heat and a powered device may not suit everyone’s sleep routine.
Important limitations and safety considerations
- Ojai is a wellness and relaxation product, not a medical device.
- The reported 56% reduction is an immediate average change in self-rated discomfort across five measures, not a diagnosis or proof of lasting improvement.
- Persistent pain, sudden vision changes, double vision, significant redness, discharge or recurring headaches warrant advice from an optometrist or other qualified clinician.
- Do not use a heated, compressive mask over irritated or injured skin, and follow the product’s own instructions for cleaning, charging and fitting.
- Remove it if you feel pain, excessive heat, dizziness, nausea or visual disturbance.
Bottom line
At $99, GUNNAR Ojai is best understood as a structured post-screen relaxation tool: active compression, warmth, vibration, blackout and optional audio wrapped into a short routine. The pilot results are encouraging but self-reported and not clinical evidence. Buy it if those features will help you consistently take screens-off breaks; choose glasses or professional eye care instead when your need concerns active screen viewing, vision correction or ongoing symptoms.
