You can’t reliably make a torrent download 300% faster with one setting. Speed depends on the torrent’s available peers, your internet connection, and how your client and network are configured. Work through those causes in order; a setting change can fix a bottleneck, but it cannot create more seeders or exceed the connection’s available capacity.
Why the 300% speed claim is not established
BitTorrent Inc.’s connection and slow-download guides explain possible causes of poor performance, but they do not establish a typical speed increase—or any result—of 300% from changing settings. Its recommendation to set upload capacity to 70% of a measured maximum is a configuration starting point, not a promised download gain or a measured performance result.
The guidance below is for legal, authorized torrents. A slow result on one torrent does not necessarily mean your broadband is slow: torrent downloads depend on other participating computers as well as your own connection.
Why is my download speed extremely slow?
The torrent may have too few useful seeders
BitTorrent transfers pieces among participants in a swarm: downloaders can also upload pieces to other peers. If few seeders are available, or the swarm is otherwise unable to supply pieces quickly, your download may remain slow even with a fast internet plan. BitTorrent Inc. lists insufficient seeders as a common cause in its slow-download troubleshooting guide. BitTorrent.org’s BEP 3 protocol specification describes the peer-to-peer protocol.

Your local connection may be the bottleneck
Poor Wi-Fi, a weak or inconsistent connection, or another network issue can limit the client. Compare the client’s performance with general internet connection quality. If you are on Wi-Fi, testing over Ethernet can help determine whether the wireless link is the problem; a cable will not fix a weak torrent swarm or a limit elsewhere on the network.
Upload limits can affect downloads
An upload setting that is too high can consume capacity your connection needs for other traffic, while an unnecessarily low setting can also be counterproductive. BitTorrent Inc.’s connection guide, modified January 16, 2023, recommends measuring maximum upload capacity and uses 70% of that measurement as a configuration starting point. The company cautions: “Higher settings will not give you better speed, and may in fact make download speeds worse.” This is vendor guidance, not a universal optimum for every client or network.

- Wifi 6 High-speed Transmission: The WiFi adapter supports the new generation of WiFi6 technology with transmission speeds of up to 600 Mbps on 5 GHz + 287 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, enabling lightning-fast transmission of video at ultra-high speed and low latency
- Dual-band Connection: The AX900 USB WiFi adapter under the AX standard, the 5G band rate can reach 600Mbps, and the 2.4G band can reach 286Mbps. Note: Use WiFi 6 Router to achieve AX900 speed
- Built-in Drivers for Windows 10/11: The WiFi Adapter for Desktop PC just supports Windows 10/11 which CPU architecture is X86/X64, supports CD-free installation, no need to download drivers, saving time and worry. Please note this Adapter doesn't support MacOS/Linux/Win 8, 8.1, 7, XP
- Receive & Transmit Two in One: A desktop computer can connect to the WiFi wireless Internet by connecting it to a wireless network card. A networked computer can connect to the network card to transmit WiFi and share it with other devices
- Stay Safe Online: The wifi dongle supports WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK, WPA/WPA2 mixed encryption modes. Note: Make sure that the distance between the adapter and router should be within 30ft
A firewall or NAT may limit peer connections
If the client cannot accept incoming connections, a firewall or router’s Network Address Translation (NAT) configuration may reduce connectivity. Check the client’s connection status and port test before changing router settings. UPnP or NAT-PMP mapping, or manual port forwarding, may address a demonstrated NAT issue; neither is a general bandwidth upgrade.
Network restrictions may be involved
Some networks may throttle or restrict BitTorrent traffic. BitTorrent Inc.’s slow-download guide says that when a Wi-Fi network is throttling BitTorrent traffic, it may not have a workaround. Its connection guide says protocol encryption might help in some cases, but forcing it can greatly reduce the number of peers you can connect to. Encryption is not a reliable way to bypass throttling.

How can I make my torrent download speed faster?
- Check the swarm. Look at the torrent’s seeders or availability. If possible, compare it with another legal, known-good torrent. A single torrent is not a reliable test of your broadband speed.
- Check your connection outside the client. If ordinary internet use is also slow, troubleshoot the connection itself. When using Wi-Fi, compare with a wired Ethernet connection or another network to isolate the local link.
- Review client speed limits. Make sure you have not accidentally capped download or upload speed. Measure your connection’s upload capacity, then use a deliberate upload limit. BitTorrent Inc.’s 70% recommendation is a starting point from its guide, not a guaranteed setting for every situation.
- Test inbound connectivity. Check the client’s connection indicator and run its port test. If it identifies a real issue, review the relevant firewall rule and whether your router supports UPnP or NAT-PMP. For manual forwarding, follow your router maker’s instructions and use only the port the client requires; do not disable the firewall wholesale or open unrelated ports.
- Investigate network interference only after local checks. Compare the same torrent on another network after checking the swarm, connection quality, client limits, and inbound connectivity. If the problem occurs only on one network, restrictions may be a factor. Forcing encryption trades away peer availability and is not a dependable bypass.
When is an Ethernet cable worth trying?
Try a wired connection when Wi-Fi seems to be the limiting link—for example, if performance improves on another network or the wireless connection is unstable. Test before buying a cable. If Ethernet makes no difference, the cause may instead be the swarm, client configuration, router, or internet service. A cable is a diagnostic option, not a universal torrent accelerator.
What upload setting should you use?
Start by measuring maximum upload capacity with the same connection you use for torrenting, then check the client’s upload limit. BitTorrent Inc.’s 2023 guide suggests setting the limit to 70% of measured maximum upload. Treat that figure as its rule of thumb, not as a download-speed multiplier: it does not mean downloads will become 70% faster, and it does not establish a 300% gain. If the connection becomes sluggish for other tasks, reduce the limit and reassess.

Should you force protocol encryption?
Only consider it as a troubleshooting test when you have reason to suspect network interference and have already checked local settings. BitTorrent Inc. says forced outgoing encryption may be necessary for some users facing aggressive throttling, but warns that it greatly reduces the number of peers available. That trade-off can make a download slower, and encryption does not guarantee that a network restriction will be overcome.
