Virtus Solis and Brae Systems have announced a 20-year power purchase agreement for an initial 100 MW of proposed orbital solar power, with stated annual delivery of 876,000 MWh to a planned receiving station in Illinois. This is a commercial agreement, not a working power plant: the orbital system, receiver and data-center infrastructure have not yet been deployed, and the project still faces technical, financing and construction milestones.

What the Illinois agreement covers

The companies announced the agreement on September 30, 2026. Virtus Solis, which issued the announcement, describes the initial supply as 100 MW of 24/7 orbital solar baseload power and says it would deliver 876,000 MWh per year. The planned Illinois receiving station is intended to supply Brae Systems’ subsea GPU data-center infrastructure. The company announcement is the source for the contracted figures and terms.

Brae also has an option to increase capacity to 250 MW within three years after initial commercial operations. Virtus Solis says that capacity would produce 2.19 million MWh annually. The option is a possible expansion, not part of the initial 100-MW commitment.

For scale, 876,000 MWh a year averages 100 MW continuously across the year: 100 MW multiplied by 8,760 hours. That arithmetic describes the stated annual energy total; it does not independently verify generation, delivery or uptime. Virtus Solis also claims 99.9% uptime, but that figure is not verified operating performance.

How the proposed system would deliver power

Virtus Solis says its system would collect solar energy in orbit, convert it into radio-frequency (RF) energy, beam it to Earth and convert it back into electricity at a terrestrial receiver. The company describes modular orbital arrays assembled in space. Trade publication pv magazine’s coverage says the proposed receiver would be co-located with a pilot data center in Illinois and reports that the company envisions a footprint comparable to utility-scale solar arrays.

In orbit, sunlight collection would not follow the same night-and-day cycle or weather interruptions as ground-based solar. That is the design rationale, not evidence that this system has demonstrated continuous commercial output. Turning the concept into delivered electricity depends on the full chain working together: orbital generation, wireless transmission, ground reception and connection to the intended computing load.

What is known about readiness and timing

Independent reporting says the project infrastructure has not yet been deployed. In Latitude Media’s September 30, 2026 report, Virtus Solis CEO John Bucknell described a planned 100-kW orbital pilot within about 24 months and expected first power around 2030. Those are executive expectations reported at the time, not guaranteed delivery dates. The company has also said its next major public wireless power-transfer demonstration is planned for March 2027; that demonstration has not yet taken place.

Latitude Media reported that a previous demonstration achieved about 4% wireless-link efficiency and that Bucknell hoped the planned March 2027 demonstration would exceed 50%. The higher figure is a target, not a result. The same report says Virtus Solis received an approximately $2 million ARPA-E award in January 2025.

The full PPA, its price and detailed conditions are not public in the reviewed reports. The sources do not establish a complete financing plan, regulatory approvals, construction progress or an in-service date. The companies’ description of this as the “world’s first commercial” space-solar PPA should be read as their characterization: Latitude Media notes that PG&E and Solaren signed an earlier space-solar agreement.

Why a signed PPA is not the same as a working power plant

A PPA records a commercial arrangement for power under agreed terms; it does not, by itself, demonstrate that the generating equipment exists or can deliver electricity. For this project, the announced contract is a meaningful commercial milestone, but delivery depends on financing and execution of an unusually complex system spanning orbit and a ground receiver.

There is a relevant precedent, though not a prediction of this project’s outcome. Latitude Media reports that PG&E and Solaren agreed to a 200-MW space-solar PPA in 2009 with delivery planned from 2016. The parties mutually cancelled the agreement in 2015 after Solaren failed to secure financing. The example illustrates the gap that can remain between signing a power contract and building a space-power system.

What to watch next

  • Demonstration: whether the planned March 2027 RF power-transfer demo takes place and what measured performance it reports.
  • Orbital pilot: whether the planned 100-kW pilot reaches orbit on the executive’s expected timeline.
  • Project finance and construction: whether funding, approvals and deployment become verifiable.
  • Ground delivery: whether the Illinois receiver and pilot data center are built and connected to the proposed system.
  • Commercial terms: whether the PPA’s price, detailed conditions and delivery schedule are disclosed.

As John Bucknell told Latitude Media, “There are technical and financial milestones associated with both sides.” The milestones matter because neither the agreement nor the proposed schedule establishes that the system will reach commercial operation.
