Choose the iPhone 18 Pro Max if you already rely on Apple’s ecosystem, value its tested performance and battery results, or prefer its camera results in the low-light scenes compared. Choose the Galaxy S26 Ultra if you want Android, a built-in S Pen, dedicated 5x telephoto reach, or a screen privacy feature. Neither is the automatic choice for everyone. Their U.S. 256GB launch prices were nearly identical, so check current offers and compare the same storage capacity before deciding.

Which one fits your ecosystem and daily use?
Choose iPhone if your digital life is already Apple-centered
If you use an iPhone with Apple services, accessories, or other Apple devices, moving to the iPhone 18 Pro Max is the lower-friction choice. It runs iOS 27 and supports Apple Intelligence, whose availability Apple says depends on supported languages and regions. The A20 Pro is its launch processor.
Choose Galaxy if you prefer Android or want pen input built in
The Galaxy S26 Ultra runs Android 16 with One UI 8.5 and includes a built-in S Pen, making it the more direct fit if handwriting, sketching, or pen-based input matters to you. Samsung’s release also describes Galaxy AI features; access to AI and software features can vary by region, language, account, and updates. Before switching, consider the apps, cloud services, accessories, and devices you already use.

Camera choice: low-light results or long-range reach?
What the hardware provides
Apple identifies a 48MP main camera with variable aperture for the iPhone 18 Pro line. Samsung lists a 200MP wide camera, 50MP ultrawide, 10MP 3x telephoto, and 50MP 5x telephoto for the Galaxy S26 Ultra.
What the comparison found
In its scene-specific comparison, Tom’s Guide reported better reach from the Galaxy’s dedicated 5x camera, while its example photos favored the iPhone for low-light image clarity. Those observations are not universal camera rankings: results depend on the scene, settings, and the look you prefer. If possible, compare sample photos of the subjects you actually shoot, especially distant details or night scenes.

Display and privacy: the Samsung has a specific advantage
Both phones have 6.9-inch displays by their manufacturers’ rounded-corner measurement conventions. Samsung specifies a QHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel with an adaptive 1–120Hz refresh rate and 2,600-nit peak brightness. Its clearest differentiator is Privacy Display: when enabled, it limits what people at side angles can see, and Samsung says it can be configured for selected apps and situations. That may matter on public transport, while travelling, or in a shared office. The feature is useful only if its behavior and image visibility suit you; try it in person if you can.
Performance and battery: what one review’s tests say
Tom’s Guide’s September 2026 comparison reported the following results under its own review conditions. Benchmarks and a battery-drain run are useful for comparing those tested units, but they cannot guarantee a particular owner’s battery life or results in every workload.

| Tom’s Guide test | iPhone 18 Pro Max | Galaxy S26 Ultra |
|---|---|---|
| Battery-drain test | 18 hours 27 minutes | 16 hours 40 minutes |
| Geekbench 6, single-core / multi-core | 4,741 / 12,789 | 3,785 / 11,563 |
| 3DMark Solar Bay Unlimited, fps / score | 67.9 fps / 17,850 | 49.37 fps / 12,984 |
In that publication’s reported tests, the iPhone led on battery-drain time and both benchmark results. Apple also describes the iPhone 18 Pro Max as having a larger battery and calls its battery-life increase the largest ever on iPhone; that is Apple’s characterization, not a shared-method comparison with Samsung. Do not use manufacturers’ separate battery claims as if they came from the same test.
Price and storage: compare the deal you can actually buy
At U.S. launch, the 256GB models were effectively level: Apple listed the iPhone 18 Pro Max at $1,299, and Samsung listed the Galaxy S26 Ultra at $1,299.99. The iPhone was listed in a 2TB configuration as well as 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB; Samsung’s U.S. release listed 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB. Availability of a particular capacity can differ by region and retailer.

For a purchase now, compare like-for-like capacity and the final price after any trade-in or carrier offer. Check whether a discount requires a new line, financing, or a particular plan, and confirm local taxes and return terms. A launch price alone cannot establish which phone is the better value today.
Make the decision by priority
- Already invested in iOS and Apple services: favor iPhone 18 Pro Max to keep your existing setup.
- Want Android and an included stylus: favor Galaxy S26 Ultra for Android 16/One UI 8.5 and its built-in S Pen.
- Often photograph distant subjects: lean Galaxy for its dedicated 5x telephoto and the longer reach Tom’s Guide reported.
- Care most about the reviewed low-light examples: lean iPhone, while treating the comparison as scene-specific rather than a promise about every photo.
- Need to reduce side-angle screen viewing: consider Galaxy’s built-in Privacy Display.
- Care about the cited battery and benchmark tests: the iPhone led in Tom’s Guide’s reported results, with the limitations of one publication’s testing in mind.
- Shopping on price: compare current local offers at the same storage capacity; the U.S. launch prices do not tell you today’s final cost.
Verdict
The iPhone 18 Pro Max is the stronger fit for Apple users and for buyers persuaded by its lead in Tom’s Guide’s reported battery and benchmark tests. The Galaxy S26 Ultra is the more compelling pick for Android users who value the S Pen, Samsung’s 5x telephoto reach, or Privacy Display. If neither ecosystem nor a specific feature decides it, compare the phones in person and buy the one with the better current same-capacity offer.
