“Frame injection” can mean two different things: a historical Internet Explorer flaw that let a malicious site navigate a frame across domains, or modern attacks that abuse framing—especially clickjacking. For today’s site owners, the key defense is a restrictive Content Security Policy (CSP) frame-ancestors response header, tested on the pages and routes that matter.
What is a frame injection attack?
The phrase is not a single, consistently used name for a current vulnerability. It may refer to Microsoft’s historical “Frame Spoof” flaw, or be used more broadly for attacks that exploit how a site is displayed inside a frame. Those cases have different mechanics and should not be treated as the same browser bug.
The historical Internet Explorer frame-navigation flaw
Microsoft’s MS98-020 security bulletin said Internet Explorer’s cross-domain protection did not extend to frame navigation. A malicious site could put attacker-controlled content in a frame within another site’s window, potentially leading a user to mistake it for the legitimate site and disclose personal information. The bulletin covered specified Internet Explorer 3.x and 4.x releases, was published in 1998, and was updated in 2003; Microsoft said a patch was issued. It is historical context, not evidence that current browsers have the same flaw.
Modern framing abuse: clickjacking and related techniques
In clickjacking, an attacker embeds a legitimate page and uses deceptive or layered presentation so that a user’s apparent click activates a different control. Some cross-site leak (XS-Leak) techniques also rely on loading a target in a frame. OWASP describes these as contemporary framing-related concerns in its Clickjacking guidance and XS-Leaks overview.

How do you stop a page from being loaded in a frame?
Use the CSP frame-ancestors directive in the page’s HTTP Content-Security-Policy response header. It specifies which ancestor pages may embed the resource. The W3C specification says this applies to embedding through a frame, iframe, object, embed, or applet element, or equivalent functionality in non-HTML resources.
frame-ancestors 'none'blocks framing by any origin. Use it when the page should never be embedded.frame-ancestors 'self'allows framing only by pages from the same origin.- For a page that must be embedded by another site, specify only the exact origins the application requires. Keep that allowlist narrow.
For example, a response header for a page that must not be framed is Content-Security-Policy: frame-ancestors 'none'. The policy must be sent as a response header; do not assume that placing it in page markup provides the required protection. Should you also send X-Frame-Options?
X-Frame-Options is a legacy compatibility control. OWASP describes CSP frame-ancestors as superseding it in browsers that support the CSP directive, but behavior can differ in older clients when both headers are present. Whether to send both depends on the browsers your application supports and how those versions handle the combination.

OWASP discusses the compatibility considerations in its Clickjacking Defense Cheat Sheet. Avoid choosing a policy solely on the assumption that every browser interprets both headers the same way.

How can you test for clickjacking protection?
Test the response a browser actually receives, not just the application’s intended configuration. OWASP recommends attempting to embed the application in a frame from an external domain and confirming that the browser blocks it when framing is prohibited.
- Identify the sensitive pages that should not be framed and any pages that genuinely need to be embedded.
- Request those pages and inspect their final HTTP responses for the expected CSP
frame-ancestorspolicy and, if used,X-Frame-Options. - From an external origin, attempt to load representative protected pages in a frame. Confirm that the browser blocks the embedding.
- Repeat the checks across relevant routes and supported browsers. Review the response after CDN, proxy, and application middleware processing, since an intermediary that strips a protection header can undermine the policy.
OWASP’s testing and prevention guidance and defense cheat sheet cover these protections. A successful test verifies the framing control for the checked pages and browser conditions; it does not establish that the whole application is free of other vulnerabilities.

What framing headers do not protect against
Framing restrictions prevent unauthorized embedding. They do not stop attacks that do not rely on framing, repair injection flaws, or replace other secure development practices. Treat CSP as one layer of defense, and address the underlying cause of any separate application vulnerability.
