ADLINK’s Pocket AI (EGX-TBT-A500) is a small external GPU built around an NVIDIA RTX A500, intended to add GPU acceleration to a compatible notebook or compact computer. It is not a self-contained AI computer: it needs a Thunderbolt host, a certified cable and a separate USB-C Power Delivery supply. Its 4 GB of graphics memory is also a major practical limit for machine-learning workloads.

What ADLINK Pocket AI is

Pocket AI is an external GPU (eGPU) that connects to a host computer over Thunderbolt 3 using PCI Express 3.0 x4. ADLINK positions it for AI development, professional graphics and embedded industrial applications. It is an accelerator attached to another computer, not a standalone system that runs workloads by itself.

ADLINK lists an NVIDIA Ampere GA107 RTX A500 with 2,048 CUDA cores, 64 Tensor cores, 16 RT cores, 4 GB of GDDR6, peak FP32 performance of 6.54 TFLOPS and dense INT8 inference performance of 100 TOPS. These are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent comparative benchmark results. ADLINK’s product page provides the specifications and requirements.

What the performance figures mean—and what they do not

The 100 TOPS figure describes advertised dense INT8 inference capability; 6.54 TFLOPS is the stated peak FP32 figure. Neither number alone tells you how quickly a particular model or graphics application will run. Actual usefulness depends on the workload, software and host configuration, and the cited sources do not establish independent performance comparisons with laptop GPUs or competing eGPUs.

  • MODULAR GPU & PSU SUPPORT — Swap out to the latest GPU and ATX PSU—or upcycle an older card with PCIe Gen 4 support via easy tool-free install using included thumbscrews

For machine learning, the more immediate constraint is the 4 GB of GDDR6. A model and its working data must fit within available GPU memory to use the GPU in the intended way. If they do not, you may need a smaller model or another approach; the headline compute figures do not remove this memory limit.

Check compatibility before buying

A USB-C-shaped port is not enough. ADLINK requires a dedicated Thunderbolt 3 or later port with eGPU support and recommends Thunderbolt 4. The computer must also support eGPUs and Resizable BAR. ADLINK lists Windows 10/11 and Linux, but says Mac systems are unsupported. It also cautions that Linux hot-plug is not supported.

  • Note: The OCulink interface does not support hot plugging, and the computer needs to be turned off to unplug the cable.

The device should connect directly to the host rather than through a daisy chain. ADLINK notes that certain PCIe power-management features are unsupported, so check its current compatibility and driver documentation for the exact host configuration before purchase. ADLINK’s FAQ and product requirements contain the manufacturer’s compatibility guidance.

Power, cable and portability

Pocket AI needs a separate USB-C PD power source supporting 15 V and at least 40 W, as well as a certified Thunderbolt 3-or-later cable. ADLINK’s listed package contents are the unit and a quick start guide; do not assume the cable or power supply is included unless the seller’s current listing says so.
