The best browser extension is the one that solves a task you actually have without asking for more access than it needs. This guide organizes 100 extensions and extension candidates into ten categories, from privacy tools and password managers to PDF helpers and developer utilities. It is a menu, not a checklist: you do not need all 100.
Availability, features, permissions and pricing can change. For every pick below, check the current listing in your browser’s official extension store before installing; the listing should confirm whether it supports your browser and version. Names are starting points for comparison, not guarantees that a particular extension is currently available in every browser.
How to choose an extension—and check that it is safe
A browser extension is software added to a browser to add or change features. Microsoft describes an Edge extension as a small app that extends the browser experience. Extensions can be useful, but some need access to the pages you visit or information you enter, so treat them like any other software you install.
- Start with a task. Decide what you want the extension to do. Avoid installing several tools that perform the same job.
- Use the official store. Chrome extensions are installed and managed through the Chrome Web Store and Chrome’s extension controls. Edge users can check Microsoft Edge Add-ons or, where available, the Chrome Web Store. A listing in one store does not establish that the same extension is supported in another browser.
- Check the publisher and listing. Confirm the developer name, read recent reviews and feedback, and look for signs of ongoing maintenance such as recent updates. Ratings are a signal to consider, not proof of safety.
- Read the requested access. Ask whether the extension needs access to all websites, or whether narrower access is available. Start with the minimum permissions that let it do its job; Edge provides controls for reviewing and changing extension site permissions.
- Prefer a smaller footprint. Install only the extensions you need, remove ones you stop using, and review permissions again when an extension changes or adds features. Chrome Help recommends Enhanced Safe Browsing for additional protection when installing extensions.
Chromium-based browsers can share some compatible extensions, but portability is not a promise that every extension works in every browser or browser version. For example, Bitwarden’s 2025 compatibility guide describes support for the two most recent versions of Chrome, Firefox, Opera and Edge, and says Safari support is packaged with its macOS app. That is Bitwarden’s stated support, not a general rule for extensions.

Microsoft says its Edge Add-ons Featured badge is intended to identify extensions that met a high bar for quality, reliability, security, privacy and user experience when evaluated. A badge or store listing is still not a substitute for reviewing the publisher, permissions and current details yourself.

These tools aim to help with blocking, tracking awareness, cookie choices or website reputation. Their functions and permissions differ; check the current listing and your browser’s built-in protections before adding one.

Password and identity tools
Password managers and identity tools can reduce the need to reuse passwords or keep credentials in notes. Choose one whose browser support, account model, recovery process and permissions suit you. Microsoft’s Edge productivity listings describe Bitwarden as securing passwords, passkeys and sensitive information; Bitwarden’s own compatibility statement is noted above.

Writing aids can check language or suggest revisions; research extensions can save sources, highlights or notes. Review what text or page data a tool processes, especially before using it on private or work material. Microsoft’s popular Edge list describes Grammarly as an AI writing and grammar checker.

What to do when an extension stops working
- Check the extension’s current store listing and publisher page for browser-version requirements or a status notice.
- Update the browser and extension, then test the feature on a page where it should work.
- Review site permissions and account sign-in; a feature may require access that was denied or changed.
- Temporarily disable other extensions to identify a conflict. Re-enable only the ones you need.
- If an extension asks for unexpected access, behaves differently from its description or is no longer maintained, disable or remove it and use a browser feature or another tool instead.
