BetMGM confirmed on December 21, 2022, that patron records had been obtained without authorization. The company said it believed the intrusion happened in May 2022 and that it discovered the incident on November 22. Reports described about 1.5 million affected customers, while the database a hacker advertised for sale was said to contain nearly 1.57 million records; those figures describe different things and do not establish an exact count of unique people.
What happened in the BetMGM breach?
In a statement quoted by SecurityWeek, BetMGM said “patron records were obtained in an unauthorized manner.” The statement characterized the event as an unauthorized acquisition of records; it did not say that passwords or account funds had been accessed.
SecurityWeek reported that a hacker advertised a database for sale at the same time BetMGM issued its statement. The hacker claimed it contained nearly 1.57 million records dating from November 2022 and allegedly covered “any customer that has placed a casino wager.” That description was the seller’s claim, not independent confirmation of the database’s contents or the number of distinct people represented.
What information was exposed?
SecurityWeek reported that the records included some combination of the following fields. BetMGM said “The affected information varied by patron,” so the list does not mean every affected person had every type of information exposed.

- Names, email addresses, postal addresses and phone numbers
- Dates of birth
- Hashed Social Security numbers
- Account identifiers and transaction information
A hashed Social Security number is not the same as a Social Security number stored in plain text. But hashing alone should not be treated as proof that an identifier is impossible to misuse; the report does not provide enough technical detail to assess the hashing method or the risk for an individual record.
Were passwords or money stolen?
BetMGM said it had no evidence that account passwords or funds were accessed. That is the company’s stated finding, not a guarantee that every account was unaffected in every way. It recommended that patrons change their passwords even though it reported no evidence of password access.

If you used the same password for BetMGM and another service, change it on both accounts and give each a unique password. Review account activity and payment statements for transactions you do not recognize, and be cautious of messages that use personal details to pose as BetMGM or a financial institution. These are prudent precautions; they do not imply that the breach report confirmed account takeover or financial theft.
How many customers were affected?

Because a record count and a customer count are not necessarily equivalent, the advertised database size should not be reported as a confirmed number of people affected.

What did BetMGM offer affected patrons?
SecurityWeek reported that BetMGM recommended password changes and offered two years of credit monitoring and identity restoration to impacted individuals. The report does not establish that every customer was eligible for or received those services. If you believe you were affected, check any direct notice from BetMGM for eligibility, enrollment steps and deadlines rather than assuming the offer applied to every account.

Bloomberg Law reported that consolidated litigation arising from the 2022 BetMGM breach was resolved on June 17, 2025. That establishes that the litigation was resolved; it does not, by itself, establish the terms or imply an admission of liability.

A separate MGM incident should not be confused with the BetMGM breach. The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada reported that MGM’s 2019 incident affected 1,934,090 Canadians, including 5,635 whose government identifiers were compromised. The regulator found that the breach created a real risk of significant harm and that MGM did not report the incident or notify affected Canadians as soon as feasible. These findings concern the 2019 MGM incident, not the 2022 BetMGM event.
