Choose Catalyst if your exact iPhone model has a compatible case and you prioritize its advertised 10-meter waterproof rating; choose OtterBox Frē (the LifeProof-engineered line) if its model-specific fit and features suit you better. Those current manufacturer claims do not come from a matched independent comparison. The older Catalyst-versus-LifeProof comparison favored Catalyst for its deeper water rating and slimmer profile, and Frē for its lower historical price and broader color and accessory choices—but those details are not current shopping guidance.
What the older comparison found
iMore’s comparison, published around 2018, covered earlier product generations. It reported Catalyst waterproofing to 10 meters, versus 2 meters for LifeProof FRĒ, and gave both cases a 2-meter drop rating. It described Catalyst as slimmer and FRĒ as bulkier. In that comparison, FRĒ was the less expensive option with more colors and additional accessories; Catalyst was described as black-only and without additional accessories for the case reviewed. The current pages cover different iPhone models and do not establish a same-phone, same-generation performance test. Treat the figures below as manufacturer claims for the listed products, not proof that one brand performs better in real-world use.

Choose Catalyst when water-depth rating is your priority
For an iPhone 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max, Catalyst’s cited Total Protection case advertises a greater immersion depth than the current Frē information: 10m (33ft), compared with Frē’s stated 2m for up to one hour. That does not establish equivalent immersion duration, nor does it prove Catalyst is more protective overall. Check the exact phone variant and the manufacturer’s instructions before relying on either case around water.

Choose Frē when its coverage and ecosystem fit your needs
Frē’s cited iPhone 17 listing specifies an integrated screen protector, port covers, MagSafe magnets, and strap/charm anchors. Its current series overview includes more iPhone generations than the Catalyst page cited here. If you want one of those features—or own a model listed for Frē but not the Catalyst product—verify the exact case listing and its fit before buying.
Use price, color, and accessories as current listing checks
The older comparison characterized FRĒ as cheaper and available in more colors, but that does not establish today’s price or selection. Compare live listings for the same iPhone model and check the exact SKU for available colors and what is included. - Match the exact iPhone. Confirm the full model name—not just the generation—on the manufacturer’s product page. A case for another iPhone variant is not a substitute.
- Compare immersion depth and duration together. Catalyst’s cited page gives a depth claim; Frē’s series information states both depth and duration. Do not infer an unstated duration or treat the numbers as a head-to-head result.
- Check drop and screen protection separately. The cited Catalyst page states a drop height and standard; the cited Frē iPhone 17 listing states 5X military-standard drop defense and an integrated screen protector. These claims use different descriptions, so they do not establish comparative drop performance.
- Confirm day-to-day features. Look for port covers, MagSafe support, screen coverage, button and touch access, thickness, and any strap attachment you need in the listing for your exact case.
- Read warranty terms and final price. OtterBox describes Frē’s warranty as limited lifetime; coverage is subject to its terms, and its cited product page says an approved covered claim may require shipping, handling, and taxes. Compare current prices for the same phone model rather than relying on old prices.
