If you want to keep a conversation, do not choose Clear all messages.
Before deleting anything: make a backup
WhatsApp recommends backing up chats before deleting content on iPhone. Android guidance recommends backing up chats to a Google Account before removing phone content. A backup is a safety precaution, not a guarantee that every deleted item can be restored.
WhatsApp says it cannot recover deleted messages for you, so review every selection before confirming deletion.
Open WhatsApp’s storage manager
iPhone
- Open WhatsApp and tap your profile picture.
- Open Storage and data.
- Tap Manage storage.
Android
- Open WhatsApp and tap More options (the three-dot menu).
- Tap Settings, then Storage and data.
- Tap Manage storage.
Labels can vary slightly by app version. The amount of storage WhatsApp is using appears at the top, followed by tools for reviewing large files and media from individual chats.

Find what is consuming the space
Start with the largest files
Open the large-items section and sort by Largest when that option is available. Watch for long videos, repeated forwards, large documents and batches of photos. Open items before selecting them so you know what they are and whether another copy is needed.
Check individual chats
Use the chat-level media view to see which conversations hold the most files. From a chat, tap the chat name and open Media, Links, and Docs (the wording may vary). Select files there when you want to clean one conversation rather than search all WhatsApp media.

Delete media without deleting the conversation
- In Manage storage, open Large files or a listed chat.
- Preview the items and select only the files you have checked.
- Tap the delete or trash icon and confirm.
This removes the selected WhatsApp media, not the chat. If your goal is to keep the conversation, avoid any confirmation that says Clear all messages.
Clear a chat’s media while keeping its messages
WhatsApp provides a media-only clearing choice with controls for file types. Select the photos, videos, documents or other media you no longer need, while leaving message history selected for retention. Clearing a chat does not remove the chat from the Chats tab or remove you from a group; however, clearing messages does remove their history from your copy.

When you need a precise selection, use the chat’s Media, Links, and Docs view instead of a whole-chat clearing command.
Why phone storage may not fall by the deleted file’s full size
Another copy may still be on the phone
Deleting an item in WhatsApp may not remove every saved copy on the device. A photo or video saved to the phone’s Photos or Gallery app, or duplicated elsewhere, may need to be deleted separately.

WhatsApp and the operating system count differently
WhatsApp’s storage number and the number shown in iPhone or Android settings can differ because they use different calculation methods. A mismatch alone does not prove that cleanup failed.
Recheck after cleanup
Return to Manage storage and your phone’s storage settings after deletion. Give the system a moment to recalculate, then look for duplicate saved media if the expected space is still unavailable.

If WhatsApp still reports critically low storage
WhatsApp warns that it may not work properly when the phone has no available space. After removing WhatsApp media, use the phone’s own storage screen to find other large or unused files. WhatsApp’s troubleshooting guidance also suggests deleting old or unused device media, such as large videos, and clearing the WhatsApp cache where the operating system offers that control.

- If a file matters, copy it to a location you control before deleting the WhatsApp and device versions.
A safe repeatable cleanup routine
- Back up your chats using the backup option for your platform.
- Open Storage and data > Manage storage.
- Sort large items first and inspect the chats using the most space.
- Delete only selected media you have reviewed.
- For a specific conversation, clear media types rather than messages.
- Check the phone’s Photos or Gallery app for duplicate saved copies.
- Recheck both WhatsApp and system storage; if space remains low, remove unrelated old files or clear the WhatsApp cache.
