Marvell Ara is a 1.6-Tb/s digital signal processor (DSP) platform designed for integration into pluggable optical transceivers used in AI and cloud data-center networks. Its defining configuration is eight 200-Gb/s electrical host lanes and eight 200-Gb/s PAM4 optical lanes. Marvell says its 3-nm design and integrated laser-modulator drivers cut power in a 1.6T optical module by more than 20%; that is a company claim, not an independent head-to-head measurement.

What Ara is—and what it is not

An optical transceiver converts electrical data into light for transmission over fiber, then converts incoming light back into electrical signals. A DSP inside the module conditions and retimes high-speed signals and helps manage signal impairments. In an AI data center, optical links can carry traffic between compute systems and switches, including across racks. Marvell describes its optical DSPs as supporting Ethernet and InfiniBand networks. Marvell’s interconnect explainer provides additional context on how optical links fit into AI networking.

Ara is the DSP platform within that system, not a complete transceiver or a consumer product. Module makers integrate it into compatible designs; seeing an OSFP or QSFP-DD module, or a 1.6T label, does not by itself establish that the module uses Ara.

How the 1.6T lane configuration works

Marvell specifies eight 200-Gb/s PAM4 electrical host interfaces and eight 200-Gb/s-per-lane PAM4 optical interfaces. Eight lanes multiplied by 200 Gb/s yields 1.6 Tb/s on each side of the DSP’s host-to-line conversion. PAM4 encodes two bits per symbol, enabling higher data rates per lane than a one-bit-per-symbol signaling scheme at a given symbol rate.

The product brief identifies OSFP and QSFP-DD module form factors and applications including 1.6T DR8, DR4.2, 2xFR4, FR8, and LR8. These are application categories for potential module designs, not a claim that every module in those categories contains Ara. Reach and deployment fit depend on the specific transceiver design.

How Marvell says Ara reduces module power

Marvell attributes a greater-than-20% reduction in 1.6-Tb/s optical-module power to the combination of its 3-nm platform, 200-Gb/s SerDes, and integrated optical modulator drivers. Electronic Design reports that Marvell’s comparison is against its prior generation of optical DSPs. Neither the launch announcement nor the cited coverage supplies a test setup, module-by-module power values, or an independent measurement, so the figure should be read as Marvell’s stated comparison rather than a universal result. Marvell’s December 2024 announcement describes the claim.

H!Fiber 1.25G Single Mode SFP LC Module, 1000Base-LX/LH Fiber Transceiver for Cisco GLC-LH-SMD, Meraki, Ubiquit UniFi, TP-Link, Fortinet, Intel, Netgear, Mikrotik and More (SMF,1310nm,20km,DDM) 2 Pack
  • 1000Base-LX/LH SFP: Gigabit Single Mode SFP Module support 1.25 Gb/s data rates, 1310nm wavelength, SMF; Duplex Dual LC interface connected to Single-mode (OS1/OS2/OS3) LC/UPC fiber cable, up to 20km (12.4 mile); 2 Pack
  • Wide Compatibility: Perfect for Cisco GLC-LH-SMD, Meraki, Ubiquit,UniFi, Mikrotik, Intel, Fortinet, Netgear, D-Link, TP-Link and Other Open Equipment
  • Easy to Use: 1G SFP transceiver with advanced DDM function to monitor real-time parameter and state on fiber links; It supports hot-swappable, plug and play; SFP MSA Compliant, IEEE 802.3z compliant
  • Low Power Consumption: 1Gb SFP transceiver designed for energy efficiency, less than 1.05watt Power Consumption; Low EMI and advanced ESD protection
  • Friendly Service: Each sfp module is individually done test before packing; We provide 24/7 Customer Service, 30 Days Free-returned, 3 Year Free Warranty and Lifetime Technology Support

Integrated high-swing laser-modulator drivers can simplify module design, and lower module power can reduce heat produced at the module. Whether that translates into lower system cooling demand or operating cost depends on the full switch, transceiver, airflow, and workload conditions; the module figure alone does not establish those system-level savings.

Availability and how Ara fits Marvell’s later portfolio

Marvell announced Ara on December 3, 2024, with sampling to select customers forecast for Q1 2025. That was the launch-era schedule. In a 2026 investor update, Marvell said Ara was shipping in mass volume to global customers to enable 1.6T pluggable connectivity for AI data centers. The 2026 update also described later, distinct products:
