Yes. WhatsApp Web now supports one-to-one and group voice and video calls in a browser, with no desktop-app download required. Meta and WhatsApp announced the feature on July 28, 2026, and said access is rolling out gradually, so the call controls may not yet appear for every account. Meta’s announcement does not give a universal availability date or a regional rollout schedule.
What WhatsApp Web calling includes
The browser calling experience includes audio and video calls, screen sharing, reactions, a dedicated Calls tab with call history and favorites, and the ability to transfer a call between devices. WhatsApp also lists QuickHD, noise suppression, and waiting rooms for call links that require approval. These features were described in WhatsApp’s July 28, 2026 product announcement; availability may vary during rollout.
How to start a group call on WhatsApp Web
- Open WhatsApp Web in a supported browser and enter the group chat you want to call.
- Look for the voice or video call control in the chat. WhatsApp’s calling page describes starting a group video call from a group chat’s video control.
- Select the call type and allow the browser to use your camera and microphone if prompted.
- If the controls are not visible, the feature may not have reached your account yet; the rollout is gradual.
A computer camera and microphone are needed to participate with video and audio. If your computer lacks suitable built-in hardware, a USB webcam with a microphone is one practical option.
How many people can join a WhatsApp Web call?
WhatsApp’s July 28, 2026 Web announcement does not state a maximum group-call size. Meta announced limits of up to eight people for group video calls and up to 32 for audio calls in 2023, but those figures were for the Windows desktop app, not WhatsApp Web. Do you need the WhatsApp desktop app?
No. The Web feature is designed to make and receive calls directly in a browser without downloading an app. The Windows desktop app is a separate installed client; its published participant limits do not establish the limit for browser calls.
Are WhatsApp Web calls free and encrypted?
WhatsApp says Web calls are end-to-end encrypted, have no time limits, and are free. Your internet provider or mobile carrier may still charge for the data used. See the WhatsApp calling page for its calling information.
