GB Test Lab turns a Game Boy cartridge into a diagnostic instrument. Its free ROM, created by Marcel Pflug for the Game Boy Museum, runs on the original DMG-01 and checks memory, interrupts, controls, cartridge behavior, link communication and printer functions while recording results. It is useful for repair work and buying checks, but it cannot judge every analog or visual fault: some tests still require your eyes, ears or another piece of hardware.

What GB Test Lab is

GB Test Lab is a diagnostic ROM rather than a game. Insert it into an original Nintendo Game Boy DMG-01 and it examines the console, reports PASSED, FAILED or INCOMPLETE, and can retain a per-console log when the flash cartridge has a working battery. The Game Boy Museum offers the ROM as a free download (the public ZIP is listed as 1.82 MB in 2026), a browser version and a build suitable for compatible flash cartridges.

The project’s named flagship hardware example is the EverDrive GB X7. Any DMG-compatible flash cartridge must be able to run the ROM; battery-backed storage is needed if you want logs to survive powering the console off. A link cable and Game Boy Printer are optional accessories for the advanced tests.

What the diagnostic suite checks

Automatic system and memory checks

The quick check runs memory, cartridge-slot, interrupt and system tests in sequence. It also examines memory areas directly and identifies incomplete results rather than treating an unperformed test as a pass.

Buttons and mechanical bounce

All eight buttons are measured for bounce behavior. The result is a timing measurement, not merely an on-screen icon that lights when a button is pressed, so it can reveal controls that make multiple rapid transitions.

Cartridge and mapper verification

GB Test Lab compares the cartridge header’s claims with observed mapper, RAM, write-lock and battery behavior. That can expose a mismatch between what a cartridge declares and what its hardware actually does.

Link-port timing

With two DMG-01 consoles and a link cable, the suite compares serial timing and counts arriving clock edges. The timing interval is about 3.5 seconds, with stated endpoint uncertainty of about 15 microseconds and estimated ratio precision of roughly four parts per million. A built-in Pong demonstration provides an additional practical check of the connection.

Game Boy Printer

A connected Game Boy Printer can produce a six-page report containing verdicts, button-bounce figures, cartridge findings, decoding information, a dynamic QR-code page and a page listing the suite’s limits. The printer dot check exercises all 160 print-head heaters, helping distinguish a printer problem from a console-side communication fault.

Sound, display and burn-in

The ROM includes sound tests, display patterns and guided observations for contrast and viewing angle. It also offers a burn-in run that can be left operating for an extended period; the project contrasts a roughly 20-minute check with leaving a repair test running for a weekend when intermittent faults are suspected.

How to run it on a real Game Boy

  1. Prepare the hardware. Use an original DMG-01, a compatible DMG flash cartridge such as the EverDrive GB X7, and a charged or working cartridge battery if you need persistent logs.
  2. Load the ROM. Copy the free GB Test Lab ROM to the flash cartridge using that cartridge’s normal transfer process, then insert it into the powered-off Game Boy.
  3. Run the quick check first. Follow the on-screen sequence and record any FAILED or INCOMPLETE result before changing the console or cartridge.
  4. Complete guided observations. For sound and display sections, follow the prompts while checking the screen, contrast, viewing angle and audio output yourself.
  5. Add accessories when required. Connect a second DMG-01 for serial timing and Pong, or connect a Game Boy Printer for the report and print-head check.
  6. Use burn-in for intermittent problems. Run the shorter session for a quick screen, then leave the test operating for a weekend when you are chasing heat- or time-dependent failures.
  7. Save and review the log. Keep the cartridge powered long enough for its battery-backed storage to write, then preserve the printed report or digital record with the console’s serial number.

What software cannot measure

Hardware or symptom Why GB Test Lab cannot directly determine it How to check it
Battery condition The DMG-01 has no analog-to-digital converter for reading battery voltage or capacity. Measure the battery with suitable electrical equipment or replace it as part of a repair procedure.
Contrast and volume wheels These controls are analog and are not connected to processor inputs that software can read. Turn the wheels through their range and judge the resulting display and audio manually.
Speaker, amplifier and headphone socket They sit beyond the last register software can reach. Listen through the speaker and headphones, and inspect or electrically test the audio path.
Dead pixels and ribbon-cable faults The console cannot read back the image it has generated. Inspect display patterns yourself at multiple contrast settings and viewing angles.

The project’s guiding distinction is that a pattern is appropriate for a human display inspection, while memory, timing and communication faults need measured or logged procedures.

Browser emulation versus physical hardware

The browser build is convenient for learning the interface and exercising software logic, but its measurements are not equivalent to a DMG-01. An emulator changes a key in one emulated cycle, so mechanical bounce is absent and the timing can appear as a single edge measuring 00.00 milliseconds. A browser also has no physical link device or printer, so those screens cannot represent real cable timing or printer behavior. Use a real console and accessories for hardware diagnosis.

How it compares with simpler test cartridges

Comparison point GB Test Lab Simple pattern-oriented cartridge
Automation Autonomous checks plus explicitly guided human observations. Usually presents patterns and leaves interpretation to the user.
Coverage Controls, memory, interrupts, cartridge behavior, link timing and printer functions, plus sound and display procedures. Often concentrated on display, sound or button patterns.
Records Per-console logging is available with battery-backed flash-cartridge storage. Persistent per-console records are not established.
Measurements and reports Numeric button and timing data, six-page printer report and QR-code page. Typically visual output without a comparable report.
Limits Explicitly identifies analog, audio-output and image-readback limits. Limits vary and may be less formally documented.
Hardware needs Best results require a real DMG-01; link and printer features require their respective accessories. Some features may run in an emulator, but hardware fidelity depends on the test.

Development and historical context

GB Test Lab’s development began in September 2023. Button tests, sound and memory features arrived during 2023–2024; burn-in, battery-backed logs, printer-dot checks, reporting and other release features were added before the first public version in September 2026.

The project discusses Nintendo’s DMG-AGING-01 test cartridge and the variety of modern homebrew diagnostics. Its distinguishing combination is autonomous checks, user-guided inspection, per-console records, cartridge self-checking and printable reporting in one cartridge-sized tool.

Interpreting results during a repair

  • FAILED: Treat the named subsystem as evidence of a fault, then retest with known-good accessories or a second cartridge to isolate the console.
  • INCOMPLETE: Check whether the required button sequence, cable, printer or second console was absent before opening the hardware.
  • PASS plus a visible or audible problem: Use the manual display and audio checks; software cannot read the panel, wheels or final amplifier stages.
  • Intermittent behavior: Repeat the run after warming the console and use the extended burn-in rather than relying on one quick pass.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use GB Test Lab on an EverDrive?

Yes. The Game Boy Museum specifically names the EverDrive GB X7 as a compatible flagship example. Use a DMG-compatible flash cartridge that can run the ROM; battery-backed storage is needed for logs that persist after power-off.

Does a browser run prove that my Game Boy is healthy?

No. Browser emulation cannot reproduce mechanical button bounce, physical link timing or printer behavior, and it cannot reveal console-specific analog, display or audio-output faults.

Do I need two Game Boys?

Only for the linked-console timing and Pong checks. The main system, memory, button, cartridge and guided sound/display tests can run on one DMG-01.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can GB Test Lab test a Game Boy Color?

The project is designed for the original DMG-01; the supplied documentation does not establish Game Boy Color coverage.

Will the ROM measure a Game Boy’s battery voltage?

No. The DMG-01 lacks an analog-to-digital converter, so battery condition requires an external electrical check.
