The right choice depends on what you need to test: Selenium and Playwright are options to assess for browser testing, while Appium is relevant when testing mobile and other user-interface platforms. This is a practical comparison, not a verified ranking of the 2024 market; the documentation cited below describes the tools, not head-to-head performance.
How to choose an automation testing tool
Start with the application and execution environment, then compare how each option fits your team. A tool’s popularity does not establish that it is best for your project.
- Application type: Identify whether you are automating desktop browsers, mobile apps, desktop software, or another user interface.
- Coverage: List the browsers, operating systems, devices, and platform combinations your tests must cover.
- Team fit: Check supported programming languages and compatibility against your team’s existing skills and test stack.
- Execution: Decide whether tests will run locally, across a grid of machines, or through a hosted service.
- Workflow: Evaluate how you will debug failures and review reports, retries, and test results.
- Total cost: Account for infrastructure and any hosted testing or reporting service. Confirm current prices and plan limits directly with providers; the documentation cited here does not establish them.
Three automation tools to assess
Selenium: browser automation and distributed execution
Selenium describes itself as “an umbrella project for a range of tools and libraries that enable and support the automation of web browsers.” Its overview covers three components: WebDriver, which controls browsers through browser automation APIs; Selenium IDE, a Chrome and Firefox extension that records actions and can help users learn Selenium command syntax; and Grid, for running tests across machines and platform combinations. That makes Selenium worth assessing when browser automation, existing Selenium investment, or distributed execution is central to the project. These are project capabilities, not evidence of superior performance. Selenium overview.
Playwright: an integrated browser-testing workflow
Playwright’s current setup documentation describes installation through npm, yarn, or pnpm, including installation of the required browser binaries. Its documented default runs tests headlessly and in parallel across Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit. Configuration includes browsers, timeouts, retries, projects, and reporters; its HTML reporter provides outcome filters and test details. These are documented behaviors, not comparative claims about speed, reliability, or ease of use. Playwright getting started.

Appium: mobile and broader UI automation
Appium describes an open-source ecosystem for automating user interfaces across iOS, Android, Tizen, browsers, macOS, Windows, TV platforms, and more. Its declared scope makes it relevant when a project extends beyond desktop websites. That list does not mean every driver, platform, or device works in every configuration; check the applicable Appium driver documentation for the target environment. Appium documentation.
Selenium vs. Playwright: what is the difference?
Both are relevant to browser testing, but the documented structures differ. Selenium is an umbrella project with separate WebDriver, IDE, and Grid components. Playwright’s getting-started guide presents an integrated test setup with browser installation, parallel headless runs across three browser engines by default, and an HTML reporter. Choose based on the workflow and coverage your team needs—not on an unsupported assumption that one is faster or more reliable.
Which tool should you use for mobile app testing?
Appium is the clearest fit among these three to investigate when the target is a mobile app or another non-desktop-browser interface: its documentation explicitly covers iOS and Android alongside other platforms. Verify the specific driver and device configuration required for the app. If your scope is browser-only, compare Selenium and Playwright against your browser matrix and team workflow instead.
Are these the most popular tools?
TestRail’s fourth-edition Software Testing & Quality Report says 39% of respondents selected Selenium, 19% Playwright, and 18% TestNG as a test automation tool, suite, or framework. These are respondent-use figures, not market share, quality scores, or proof of suitability; the report’s tool discussion addresses automation goals and challenges for 2025, so the figures should not be presented as a clean 2024 ranking. The report does not establish that its respondents represent all software teams. TestRail report.
The same report says respondents automated regression testing at 56%, functional testing at 52%, and end-to-end testing at 47%. Those figures describe the surveyed respondents’ practices, not outcomes a tool guarantees. The report also notes that complex or exploratory work—including usability, accessibility, security, and compliance—remains mostly manual in surveyed practice. Automation can support such testing, but it does not replace human judgement.

A test framework and a hosted service can serve different roles. Cypress’s FAQ describes the Cypress App as free and open source, while Cypress Cloud is a web service for recording CI test runs. Check current plan details and limits with Cypress before budgeting; the FAQ distinction alone does not establish current pricing. Cypress FAQ.
Rank #4
TestRail’s report also names BrowserStack, Sauce Labs, and LambdaTest in its tool landscape. Their inclusion is not verification of current capabilities, pricing, or terms. Treat hosted browser or device execution as a separate infrastructure decision and confirm each provider’s current offering before choosing one.
