iOS 27 makes Apple Notes easier to search with Siri AI and adds Markdown support to two Shortcuts actions: “Create Note” and “Append Text to Note.” Together, they enable four useful workflows: finding information in existing notes, creating formatted notes automatically, adding or prepending content, and updating a specific section. These are not four separate new Notes app features: three are ways to use Shortcuts, and only Siri AI search requires Apple Intelligence.
What’s actually new for Notes in iOS 27?
Apple’s iOS 27 documentation describes Siri AI search for Notes and Markdown support in the Shortcuts “Create Note” and “Append Text to Note” actions. That means the practical changes are split between Notes and Shortcuts: Siri helps retrieve existing material, while Shortcuts can create or update notes using Markdown-formatted text. Apple documents section-targeted updates as part of “Append Text to Note,” rather than as a separate action. Apple’s iOS 27 feature guide describes the Shortcuts changes.
1. Ask Siri AI to find a note or information inside one
When you remember what a note contains but not its title or location, ask Siri AI to look for it. Apple’s Notes guide demonstrates a request to find the note containing a cookie recipe, and says Siri AI can search for notes or search within notes. That makes this workflow useful for retrieving a detail as well as locating a whole note. Apple’s Notes guide describes the search capability.
Siri AI is in beta, and this workflow requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled device and a supported language. Availability also varies by region. Check Apple’s current Apple Intelligence requirements and your device’s language and regional availability before relying on it.

- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
2. Create a formatted note with a Shortcut
The Shortcuts “Create Note” action now supports Markdown. A Shortcut can therefore take structured text—such as a list or a set of labeled details—and use it to create a note with formatting, rather than leaving you to build the note manually each time. This is useful when you already have an input or repeatable process that produces the text you want to save.
To use it, build or edit a Shortcut in the Shortcuts app, add “Create Note,” and provide the Markdown text as its content. Apple documents the action’s Markdown support; it does not identify a particular prebuilt Shortcut as the required way to use it. This capability does not require Siri AI search. Apple’s iOS 27 feature guide lists the change.

3. Append or prepend Markdown to a running note
“Append Text to Note” also supports Markdown, and Apple says the action can append or prepend text. That lets a Shortcut add a new entry to a running note or place it at the beginning—for example, adding a dated update to a log or putting the latest status at the top of a working note.
Use the action with the Markdown content you want to add and the note you want to update. Choose append or prepend according to where the new material belongs. The choice is about placement: append adds after existing content, while prepend adds before it. Apple documents both options in its iOS 27 feature guide.

4. Update only the relevant section of a structured note
The same “Append Text to Note” action can target a specific section. That makes it possible to maintain a note with distinct parts—such as project status, meeting follow-ups, or reference details—without treating the entire note as one undifferentiated destination. A Shortcut can direct new content to the section that should change, keeping other sections separate.
This is a practical use of the documented section-targeting behavior, not an additional Notes feature or a separate Shortcuts action. As with Markdown creation and append/prepend, it is a Shortcuts workflow rather than an Apple Intelligence capability. Apple’s feature guide describes adding or prepending text to a specific section.

Which workflow should you use?
| Workflow | Where it happens | Apple Intelligence required? | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Search for a note or information inside notes | Siri and Notes | Yes; Siri AI eligibility, language, and regional availability apply | Finding existing material when you remember its contents but not its title |
| Create a Markdown note | Shortcuts | No | Turning structured input into a consistently formatted new note |
| Append or prepend Markdown | Shortcuts | No | Adding a new entry to a running note at the end or beginning |
| Target a particular section | Shortcuts | No | Updating one part of a structured note without directing content to the whole note |
Apple’s iOS 27 documentation establishes the relevant Shortcuts actions and their Markdown and section behavior, but does not prescribe a particular Shortcut design for every use case. The action labels are useful starting points; the input and destination depend on how you set up your own Shortcut.

Apple Intelligence features depend on compatible hardware, supported languages, and regional availability. Apple’s Notes guide describes Apple Intelligence on iOS 27 or later for an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or iPhone 16 model or later; Apple’s platform announcement also lists other eligible device families. Because eligibility can vary by feature and change over time, consult Apple’s current requirements and platform availability information for your device and region. Markdown support in the described Shortcuts actions is not the same as Apple Intelligence and should not be presented as AI-dependent.

Audio features are useful, but not part of these four changes
Apple also documents audio recording and transcription in Notes, including searching or copying transcript text and using Apple Intelligence to summarize a recording. Its current audio guide says transcription is available on iPhone 12 and later when the device language is one of the supported languages. These are useful Notes capabilities, but Apple’s documentation does not identify them as new iOS 27 additions, so they are separate from the four workflows above. See Apple’s guide to recording and transcribing audio in Notes.
