Comodo can be a good fit for technically confident Windows users who want a configurable firewall, application controls, and containment without a high upfront cost. It is harder to recommend as a default antivirus: independent test coverage is limited and unevenly dated, and SE Labs’ 2024 test found protection gaps despite a respectable overall accuracy score.

What Comodo offers

Comodo’s product page lists a free Antivirus tier and a paid complete version. The paid version is listed at $29.99 per year for one PC or $39.99 per year for three PCs; check Comodo’s current page for availability, plan terms, and renewal details before buying. The suite combines antivirus with a firewall, application rules, sandboxing or containment, host intrusion prevention, cloud-based scanning, secure shopping, and web filtering. Comodo says CIS 2025 adds real-time scanning, application sandboxing, Intel Threat Detection Technology, and Microsoft ByPassIO support. These are vendor descriptions, not independent test findings. How effective is Comodo against malware?

SE Labs: a useful but imperfect 2024 result

In SE Labs’ Home Endpoint Security test for April–June 2024, Comodo Antivirus earned 90% total accuracy, with 76% protection accuracy, 98% legitimate accuracy, and 2% false positives. Protection accuracy reflects detection and stopping of threats in that test; the 90% total-accuracy figure is not a promise that Comodo will block 90% of malware in everyday use. The protection result indicates that threats were missed in the test, while the legitimate-accuracy and false-positive figures provide additional context. SE Labs’ April–June 2024 factsheet

AV-TEST: historical results only

AV-TEST’s archive records Comodo Internet Security Premium 12 at 6/6 for protection, 5.5/6 for performance, and 5.5/6 for usability in August 2019. A June 2019 entry shows 6/6 protection, 4/6 performance, and 5.5/6 usability. These scores describe tests from 2019, not Comodo’s performance in 2026. AV-TEST’s Comodo archive

AV-Comparatives: Comodo is not in the 2025 consumer set

AV-Comparatives’ 2025 consumer report tested 19 Windows products across real-world protection, malware detection, targeted attacks, performance, and false positives. Comodo is not among the tested products, so that report does not provide a current comparison result for it. AV-Comparatives’ 2025 consumer report

Comodo’s main strengths and trade-offs

What may make it appealing

  • Many controls in one suite: The listed features include a firewall, application rules, sandboxing or containment, secure shopping, and web filtering alongside antivirus protection. Comodo’s official product page
  • Free and lower-cost options: Comodo lists a free tier and paid annual plans, although prices and terms can change. Comodo’s official product page
  • Granular tools: TechRadar describes application-level network permissions, containment tools, event views, quarantine, and bootable cleanup options. These can appeal to users who want to inspect and manage security decisions rather than leave every setting untouched. TechRadar’s Comodo review
  • A public 2024 lab result: SE Labs provides a recent, dated independent test, even though its protection result is not flawless. SE Labs’ factsheet

What to consider before choosing it

  • Limited recent lab coverage: The AV-TEST entries cited here are from 2019, and Comodo does not appear in AV-Comparatives’ 2025 consumer test set. The available record is thinner than readers may want for a confident current comparison. AV-TEST archive; AV-Comparatives report
  • Missed threats in the SE Labs test: Comodo’s protection accuracy was 76% in that particular 2024 evaluation; the result is a reason to weigh it carefully, not a prediction of performance on every device. SE Labs’ factsheet
  • More hands-on decisions: Firewall rules and containment add control, but they can also mean more prompts and configuration choices than a set-and-forget product. This is a usability trade-off implied by the documented tools, not a measured performance penalty. Comodo’s feature description; TechRadar’s review

Who is Comodo best suited to?

Consider it if you want control

Comodo is most plausible for a technically confident Windows user who values granular firewall decisions, application controls, or sandboxing and is comfortable responding to prompts. The free tier can also suit someone who wants to try the approach before paying, subject to the current terms shown by Comodo.

Look elsewhere if you want quiet simplicity and current test coverage

Families and less technical users may prefer a product that asks for fewer decisions and has a broader, more current public testing record. Comodo’s available evidence does not establish that it is a poor product; it does make a confident present-day comparison harder.

Is Comodo better than Windows Defender?

The available evidence does not support a direct verdict against Windows Defender: the cited Comodo results do not provide a matched, same-test comparison with Defender. Comodo’s firewall and application-control features may matter to a user who wants those controls, but feature count alone does not establish stronger malware protection. Compare recent results from the same independent lab, false positives, performance, ease of use, and price before treating one as the safer choice.

Is Comodo Antivirus worth paying for?

That depends on whether you will use the additional controls and whether Comodo’s current terms fit your needs. The vendor lists the complete version at $29.99 yearly for one PC and $39.99 yearly for three PCs, but those are listed prices, not a guarantee of what you will pay at checkout or renewal. If you mainly want a quiet antivirus with extensive recent lab validation, the evidence here is not strong enough to make Comodo an easy paid recommendation.

  • False positives: False alarms can interrupt legitimate work even when protection is strong.
  • Performance: Look for measured results under comparable conditions rather than assuming a feature-rich suite is faster or slower.
  • Control depth: Decide whether firewall and application-level choices are useful to you or an ongoing burden.
  • Price and renewal terms: Compare the amount charged after any initial offer and how many devices are covered.
  • Ease of use: Consider whether the product’s prompts and settings suit the people who will use the PC.

Bitdefender Total Security and Norton Antivirus Plus are among the products included in AV-Comparatives’ 2025 consumer series, so they are candidates to investigate if current recurring lab coverage matters to you. Their inclusion in that report alone does not show that either is better than Comodo; compare their actual results and plan terms. AV-Comparatives’ 2025 consumer report
