The Lexar PLAY 1TB is a capable, single-sided M.2 2230 NVMe SSD for devices that support this size and interface. Its manufacturer-rated speeds reach 5,200MB/s read and 4,700MB/s write, but those are maximum sequential figures—not a promise that every handheld can reach them. Check your exact device’s fit and link speed first; Lexar currently marks the drive “No longer available,” so local stock may be limited.

What the Lexar PLAY 1TB offers

The PLAY is a 1TB-only M.2 2230 SSD: 22mm wide and 30mm long, with a 2.45mm stated thickness. Independent reviews describe the reviewed model as single-sided. It uses PCIe Gen4x4 and NVMe 1.4, with Lexar specifying backward compatibility with PCIe Gen3.

The speed, endurance and warranty figures are manufacturer specifications, not guarantees of a particular speed in every host or of a fixed service life. Lexar’s product sheet is dated November 2023; its current product page retains the specifications and availability notice. See Lexar’s PLAY SSD specifications.

Will it fit a Steam Deck or ROG Ally?

Only if the precise model and revision support an M.2 2230 NVMe drive and provide the necessary physical clearance. A device being described as “handheld PC” is not enough to establish compatibility. Before opening a device, check its manufacturer documentation and confirm SSD length, interface, single- or double-sided clearance, and installation requirements.

Lexar 1TB NM790 Internal NVMe SSD, 7400/6500 MB/s, M.2 2280, PCIe Gen 4x4
  • [1TB] Exceptional performance up to 7400MB/s read, 6500MB/s write; 1000TBW
  • 2x faster than PCIe Gen 3 SSDs
  • Up to 40% less power consumption than DRAM cache-enabled PCIe Gen 4 SSDs
  • Host Memory Buffer (HMB) 3.0 activates the DRAM cache function of your device for a smoother transfer speed and seamless performance
  • Designed for hardcore gamers, professionals, and creators
  • Steam Deck: Tom’s Hardware says the Deck limits this drive to PCIe 3.0 operation. It can therefore operate at the host’s PCIe 3.0 link rather than realizing a Gen4 host connection.
  • ROG Ally and other handhelds: Lexar presents Steam Deck- and ROG Ally-class devices as potential use cases, but that does not confirm fit across every model or revision. PC Gamer cautions that the drive will not fit every handheld PC.

For a model-specific answer, compare the device’s service manual or official SSD requirements with the PLAY’s 2230 dimensions and interface. Do not assume that matching the 2230 length alone proves installation compatibility.

How fast is it in practice?

Lexar rates the drive for up to 5,200MB/s sequential reads and 4,700MB/s sequential writes, based on its internal testing. Actual results depend on the host, workload and drive state. A Gen4-rated SSD also cannot exceed the capabilities of a host that negotiates a slower link, as the Steam Deck example illustrates.

Independent reviews are positive overall. Tom’s Hardware’s 22 March 2024 review reports good all-around and sustained performance and relative power efficiency. PC Gamer’s 2026 guide names it the best 2230 NVMe SSD in that article and says its measured speeds were close to the advertised figures. These are the publications’ assessments and test results, not a guarantee for another device or workload.

Sustained writes and temperatures

In PC Gamer’s sustained-write test, the drive showed around 240GB of pseudo-SLC cache. In that publication’s testing, average operating temperatures were around 40°C, with peaks of 53°C. Those figures describe PC Gamer’s particular test conditions; they are not guaranteed cache capacity or operating temperatures in every enclosure or handheld.

ServeTheHome’s review, published 3 February 2024, tested the drive in a desktop M.2 slot with a Ryzen 9 7900X system. The test volume was loaded to 85% and then reduced to around 60% used. The reviewer noted that the test board did not natively support 2230 mounting and that the drive was rigged into place. That setup is useful context when interpreting its results rather than treating them as a direct handheld test.

Endurance, warranty and design trade-offs

Lexar specifies 600TBW endurance and a five-year limited warranty. TBW is a rated write-endurance figure; it should not be read as a prediction that a drive will fail at that amount or as a promise of a specific lifespan. Reviewers identify the drive’s lack of onboard DRAM, using HMB instead, and its single available capacity as limitations to weigh against its compact size and performance.

Should you buy it?

The PLAY makes sense when you need a 2230 NVMe drive, have verified that your exact device accepts it, and want a 1TB option with strong stated Gen4 performance. It is less compelling if you need more than 1TB, if your host cannot benefit from its Gen4 interface, or if physical clearance is uncertain.

Availability is a significant practical caveat: Lexar’s product page says “No longer available,” and PC Gamer reported limited retailer stock in its 2026 guide. Check live listings and pricing in your region rather than relying on old listings or assuming the drive remains readily available. Check Lexar’s current product page.

If comparing other 2230 SSDs, assess supported capacity, exact-device fit and clearance, host interface, device-specific performance, endurance and warranty, sustained-write and thermal results from comparable testing, and current local stock and price. Tom’s Hardware discusses the WD SN740 and WD Black SN770M as 2TB TLC alternatives; PC Gamer mentions the Sabrent Rocket 2230 as an option with larger capacities. The cited reviews do not establish a current like-for-like price comparison, so value depends on live local listings.
