Some iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max owners have posted questions about oily-looking marks and apparent discoloration, including around the camera rings. Those reports are anecdotal: they do not establish that the finish is fading, how widespread the issue is, or what caused the marks.
What owners are reporting—and what that does not prove
Two user posts ask about an oily appearance, spots around the camera, and discoloration near camera lens rings. They document individual concerns, not a confirmed defect. Neither post establishes that the phone’s color or finish has changed, and the reports cannot show how often the appearance occurs across all devices.
No substantiated statistic or authoritative confirmation of iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max finish fading is available in the cited sources. The reports should not be treated as evidence of a model-wide problem.
What Apple says about marks on iPhones
Apple says material from objects such as denim or items carried in a pocket can transfer to an iPhone’s textured glass or Ceramic Shield and resemble a scratch; it can often be removed. That general guidance is a possible explanation for some surface marks, not a diagnosis of the camera-area reports or proof that discoloration is removable.

Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 9, 2026, with black, silver, glacier, and burgundy finishes. Availability began September 18. The announcement describes product features, not a finish problem or a repair policy. Apple’s announcement lists the finishes and launch details.
How to clean the phone safely
- Unplug any cables and turn off the iPhone.
- Remove dust, then wipe the exterior gently with a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth. Keep moisture out of openings.
- Do not use polishing compounds, solvents, abrasive materials, or repeated scrubbing to try to remove a lasting color change. Apple warns that cleaning products and abrasives can diminish coatings or scratch the device.
Apple’s separate disinfection guidance allows gentle use of 70% isopropyl alcohol wipes, 75% ethyl alcohol wipes, or disinfectant wipes on exterior surfaces, followed by a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth. That is advice for disinfection, not evidence that alcohol treats finish discoloration. Apple says not to use bleach or hydrogen peroxide, let moisture enter openings, or submerge the phone. See Apple’s iPhone cleaning guidance for the full instructions.

When to contact Apple Support
If a mark remains after gentle cleaning, appears to be changing, or concerns you, contact Apple Support and ask about your particular device and region. The available sources do not establish a finish-specific repair or coverage policy, so eligibility or replacement should not be assumed.
A case can cover the phone’s finish if you prefer not to see it, but the sources do not show that a case prevents or fixes discoloration. Apple mentions MagSafe cases in its product information; that does not make a case a remedy for a finish issue.
